William Frederick “Billy” Daniels born 2 December 1943 – 28 February 2024 (80).

Billy was a service crew member for Nick Mauerberger 35-38 years ago and we met whilst they were competing in the WBMK Ceres Rally. Always larger than life with a personality that made him popular with everyone.

Billy never had much formal education, but he was street smart having started his working career as a Taxi driver. Fearless and determined he educated himself in employment regulations and would become a founder member of the South African Police Union.

Billy “inherited” the former Nick Mauerberger Datsun P510 SSS fitted with L28 six cylinder engine and the short boot that carried one truck battery. Close friends from day one he was extremely naughty and we often found ourselves in hot water but he was also instrumental in changing MSA policy with respect to prizegivings excluding people of colour.

His love for a good braai and a good time will be sorely missed and the stories I could tell of his rally driving are fantastic. His valued assistance on Montagu, NGK and Toyota Rallies will always be treasured.

He leaves life partner Elaine, two sons and a daughter

I will miss you my friend
