A new lap record as Charl Michael and Adcock win 4 Hour
Cape Town race driver Charl Michael Visser added a new overall Zwartkops Raceway lap record to his Kyalami mark as he brought Nova Proto NP02 he shared with Nick Adcock home to victory at the circuit’s 4 Hour South African Endurance Series season opener on Saturday. Visser’s official 57.701 second lap adds to his 1 minute 40.120 Kyalami record as he and Adcock also lead the SAEC title chase.
“I am super proud to once again be part of Nick’s Endurance team and for the opportunity to add the outright Zwartkops lap record to my Kyalami mark,” 2023 Polo Cup and multiple National Rotax karting champion Charl Michael admitted. “I’ve now also added my name to the long and illustrious list of outright Zwartkops record holders with this thrilling new mark.
“I must not only thank Nick, but also the entire Adjust for Sleep Rico Barlow Racing team for a brilliant job this weekend. The car only arrived in South Africa earlier in the week and Rico, Craig Nunns and the lads had the car right and ready in good time. Nick and my combined times saw us onto pole position, before Nick did the opening stint. I took over when he stopped an hour and fifty minutes in.
“The Ford Coyote V8-powered Novo Proto NP02 is such an awesome car to drive. As the evening set in and the high temperatures dropped, the conditions became perfect and the car really came into the zone. I was able to find a few laps without traffic and put in a few really quick laps to break the record, before cruising home to a happy victory.
“I now hold both this official 57.701 second mark, and the outright 56.914 second outright Zwartkops lap record with my pole lap there last year. I also set the fastest-ever official Kyalami lap last year. I’m delighted to have achieved all this, but I could never have achieved any of that on my own. So I remain humble to everyone from Nick to my parents, my brother Kyle, mechanic Zefrey and everyone else involved.
“Now we look forward to the rest of the South African Endurance season, starting with the 5 Hours of Aldo Scribante in Gqeberha in April,” Charl Michael concludes. “That’s another of my favourite circuits where our Danish co-driver Michael Jensen re-joins the team and there’s the chance to add another all-time record to the list. Bring it on!”
