Robertson still has a chance but the real fight is for second

Veteran race driver Michael van Rooyen stands on the threshold of claiming his first South African Touring Cars championship at the National Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola finals at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria on Saturday 25 October. Van Rooyen, who has enjoyed a consistent podium run and won two reverse grid sprint races through the season, has built up a commanding lead and only needs finish Saturday’s first race to clinch what will be a most popular title.

Jagger Robertson scored his maiden win but retired from the second race last time out to let van Rooyen and his Gazoo Toyota Corolla TC off the championship hook. Robertson needs a disaster for Michael to wrest an unlikely title in his Chemical Logistics WEC Volkswagen Golf GTI TC. Jagger’s more immediate issue is however staving Keegan Campos’ Campos Chemical Logistics FAST BMW 128tc and teammate Julian van der Watt’s similar Chemical Logistics Golf GTI off for second.

Behind them, Nathi Msimanga sits a comfortable fifth in the second Gazoo Corolla, with teammate Sa’aad Variawa and Andrew Schofield’s Safair BMW in another tight fight for sixth in the chase. Interestingly, Campos has been the most successful driver this season, winning four races versus leader van Rooyen’s two and Robertson and van der Watt with one win each. The other four races were won by Anthony Pretorius and Saood Variawa, with two wins apiece before they left to compete abroad.

The SATC SupaCup championship is in essence all done and dusted after Tate Bishop’s Angri LTR SupaPolo claimed the tile at home at Killarney last time out. Jonathan Mogotsi’s Volkswagen Genuine Parts SupaPolo is also safe in second, but teammate Jason Loosemore is hell bent on stealing third in the chase aboard his Astron Energy version. He however has his mirrors full of Dawie van der Merwe’s lone Gazoo Toyota SupaStarlet.

Van der Merwe’s lot is by no means sealed either. Racing lass Karah Hill’s Kalex, Zimbabwean Dylan Pragji’s Stylin car, Nicolaos Vostanis and Platinum Mile man Dean Venter’s SuperPolos on his case. Also watch for Graphix Design driver David Franco, Niko Zafiris and Masters men Andre Bezuidenhout and Roberto Franco. And SupaCup wildcards in former champions Bradley Liebenberg and Leyton Fourie, and newcomers, BMW Series winner Rick Loureiro and Jared Roussouw, who has shown decent pace aboard his OMG&Trend SupaPolo in 111 regional races.

The South African Touring Cars and SATC SupaCup finale tops a full Pretoria National Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola bill on Saturday 25 October. See you at Zwartkops Raceway!
