On 28 June, the third round of the National Rok Cup brought the roar of engines and the thrill of competition to the fast and technical Scribante Kart Track in Gqeberha. The event delivered everything we love about karting: tight battles, unexpected twists, and unforgettable moments on track.
Among the rising talents on the grid was Egor Grishin, competing in the highly competitive Mini Rok U/10 class. From the very first session, it was clear this round would be a test of strategy and stamina — both for the drivers and their equipment.
Qualifying: Breaking Personal Bests
All drivers rolled out on fresh tyres for qualifying, and Egor made the most of it. He improved his lap time by a full 0.7 seconds, setting a personal record of 54.6 seconds. The grid was incredibly tight — fractions of seconds separated most of the field. With tyre degradation playing a critical role, some teams opted to end their sessions early, preserving rubber for the races ahead.
Race 1: Chaos and Recovery
The first race opened with drama. Five drivers were caught in a pile-up on the opening lap — Egor included. But the young racer reacted quickly, escaping the chaos and climbing to P5 in a flash. While the top four pulled away, Egor led the chasing pack with determination. A tough battle followed, and despite a five-second penalty for a displaced bumper (caused by the incident), Egor secured a solid 7th-place finish.
Race 2: Holding the Line
Starting from 6th on the grid, Egor was part of a group that suffered from an early mistake by the front-runner. The ripple effect pushed him back, but he managed to stabilize in P7. Despite having stronger pace, passing proved difficult, and although Egor launched several bold overtaking attempts, he couldn’t make them stick. Meanwhile, he came under intense pressure from kart #50, but held his ground like a pro.
Race 3: A Spin and a Comeback
In the final race of the day, a spin on lap 6 dropped Egor back. With grit and focus, he closed the gap to the kart ahead, but the time lost meant overtaking was out of reach. He crossed the line determined and focused — another lesson learned in a young career full of promise.
Final Result: P7 Overall
Egor Grishin finishes 7th overall in Round 3 — a strong result considering the intense competition and race-day challenges. His pace, resilience, and racecraft continue to grow with each outing.
Karting is where future champions are made, and events like the National Rok Cup at Scribante prove just how exciting and essential grassroots motorsport is for South Africa’s racing scene.
