For ten years, Susan Fraser has been a familiar face in South African motorsport. She has worked as a marshal, race secretary, scrutineer, environmental officer, and even a nose cone official. Her sense of humour, commitment, and willingness to help wherever she is needed have made her a key part of the Gauteng motorsport family.

From Spectator to Seasoned Official

Susan’s story began on the spectator side of the fence. “A marshal friend invited me to come watch an event,” she recalls. “Not long after, I saw a Facebook post about recruiting marshals for off-road racing and decided to give it a try.”

Her first day on duty was one to remember. “I was so excited and nervous that when an accident happened in my corner, I forgot to put out the yellow flag,” she laughs. “I was caught up in the moment! But that day I knew this was where I belonged.”

The Race Secretary’s Balancing Act

Over the years, Susan has taken on one of the most demanding jobs in the sport, the role of race secretary. “It is one of the toughest roles,” she says. “You have to manage administration, regulations, and a steady stream of questions from teams and officials, all while keeping calm and professional.”

She has come to love the challenge. “It teaches you patience, communication, and leadership. You need to stay composed no matter what happens, because there is always something new to deal with.”

Pride in Every Chequered Flag

Ask Susan what keeps her coming back, and she smiles. “It is seeing a competitor cross the finish line and knowing I played a small part in keeping them safe. That feeling of pride never goes away. Motorsport gets into your blood.”

Inspired by Mentors, Driven by Friendship

When asked who inspires her, she does not hesitate. “Definitely Allison from MSA. She is my mentor.”

But Susan is also inspired by the community around her. “The officials, the friendships, the memories we share, those are what make it special. Motorsport really is a second family.”

Advice for the Next Generation

Susan’s advice for newcomers is honest and heartfelt. “Be ready for long hours and tough conditions. Every event is a learning opportunity, and you will make friends for life. Always stay humble and remember, never turn your back on the track.”

Favourite Memories and Racing Moments

Susan says every race has its funny or unforgettable moments. “I love making people laugh,” she says. “Seeing happy faces at the end of the day makes all the effort worth it.”

Her favourite events include the GTCs and Polo Cup. “We used to call them our bumping cars,” she grins. The V8’s and Silvercup is also on her favourite side. “On the bike side, I love all the superbikes, the masters, and the ZX10 Cup. The excitement is unmatched.”

Beyond the Track

When Susan is not officiating, she enjoys spending time with friends, family, and her children. “Motorsport takes up many weekends,” she says, “so I really value the time I get to spend at home.”

One Passion, One Family

For Susan, being part of Motorsport South Africa is more than just volunteering. “It means everything to me,” she says. “It is a community that shares a passion and an adrenaline rush that few other sports can match. Motorsport has given me purpose, confidence, and a sense of belonging.”

Officials like Susan are the heart of South African motorsport. They are the people who show up, give their all, and make every event possible.
