South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC) has announced the appointment of Theuns Beer as its new Route Director, a critical role responsible for designing and delivering the challenging and world-class routes that define the championship.

Beer steps into the position, following the tragic passing of Rudi Muller, with extensive experience within rally raid, having spent many years working behind the scenes in the operational and marshal environment of the sport. His journey has included exposure to reconnaissance, route planning and road book development, giving him a deep appreciation for both the complexity and responsibility involved in shaping a rally-raid event.

“Like many people in motorsport, my journey started with a fascination for the machinery and the thrill of competition,” says Beer. “But rally raid is something different – it captivates you. Over the years I’ve learned how fragile and complex our rally-raid ecosystem can be. Taking on this role is a chance to apply everything I’ve learned about the sport and to step into the big shoes that Rudi left behind.”

Beer believes the essence of rally raid lies in the unique relationship between terrain, competitors and organisers.

“Rally raid teaches you respect. First for the terrain, then for the people who take it on, and finally for those who organise it. A route isn’t just a path; it’s a responsibility. The unpredictability of landscapes, the importance of navigation and the logistical complexity behind every kilometre all shape how an event must be designed.”

As Route Director, Beer will work closely with Race Director Evan Hutchison, a partnership he says is fundamental to the success of any event.

“The Race Director and Route Director must operate as a unit. Evan brings deep competitive insight and experience, while my focus is on terrain and route design. When those elements align, the event becomes coherent, safe and strategically rich.”
Beer’s vision for the championship is to help deliver events that are globally respected while remaining distinctly South African.

“I would like to be part of a team known for delivering world-class events with routes that are unmistakably South African – challenging, fair and delivered with consistency and care. When competitors finish a stage, they should feel tested but also proud of what they have achieved.”

“Safety,” he says, “remains the foundation of effective route design.”

Beer says safety isn’t something you trade for challenge – it’s the foundation that allows challenge to exist. “Every difficult section must have purpose, and route design must anticipate competitor behaviour while working closely with safety teams to ensure the event remains demanding but never irresponsible.”

SA Rally-Raid CEO Archie Rutherford welcomed Beer’s appointment, saying his experience and deep understanding of the sport make him an excellent fit for the role.

“The Route Director plays an incredibly important role in rally raid. Theuns brings valuable operational experience and a deep respect for the sport, the terrain and the competitors. We are confident he will build on the strong foundation already in place and contribute to the continued growth and professionalism of the championship.”
Beer says his immediate focus will be to work closely with the existing team while strengthening the processes that underpin successful events.

“My first priority is to get into the process, listen and learn. Standardising route principles, refining reconnaissance processes and strengthening feedback loops with competitors will be important foundations for the future.”

Looking ahead, he believes the South African championship has a vital role to play in developing rally-raid talent.

“Our championship is a training ground for drivers, navigators and technical teams. By raising the standard locally, we prepare our people to compete and succeed globally.”

For Beer, the opportunity to shape the routes competitors will tackle across South Africa is both exciting and humbling.
