Gary’s motorsport journey began in the early 1970s with karting, where he progressed through the ranks to 250cc competition. His passion soon extended into radio-controlled car racing, where he achieved remarkable success alongside his son Darren, claiming multiple South African titles and competing on the world stage.

In 2006, Gary embarked on his circuit racing chapter, restoring an Escort Mk2 Group 2 car from the ground up. What followed was a highly competitive career in historic racing, including five class championships and the overall Border Historic Racing Car Register title in 2011.

His love for motorsport went far beyond one category. From campaigning a Renault R10 Gordini in endurance races, to achieving multiple Index of Performance wins, Gary’s dedication and versatility stood out. In later years, he took on the challenge of modified saloon racing, ultimately achieving a personal milestone by building a 500hp Nissan Silvia S14 , a true reflection of his skill and determination.

Gary was more than just a competitor. He was a constant presence at the track, a passionate supporter of Border Motorsport, and someone who gave tirelessly behind the scenes. Even while battling cancer, he remained involved, always ready to lend a hand, offer advice, or simply ensure the circuit he loved so much continued to thrive.

His contribution to motorsport in the Border region, both on and off the track, leaves a lasting legacy.

Gary will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Gary.
