Nothing decided after penultimate round races
The Northern Regions Extreme Festival championships continue unresolved following a cracking penultimate round at the Red Star Raceway near Delmas on Saturday. While it was in general the championship leaders who won in the Dunlop V8 Supercars, ATE VW Challenge, the DOE Formula Vee and BMW M Performance Parts, none have yet done enough to clinch a title.
It was a good day for Mustang man Warren Lombard in the Dunlop V8 Supercars. Arriving just a point clear of Terry Wilford’s similar car in the chase, Lombard put it on pole before stroking to the first race win. Wilford fought back from fourth to second ahead of Thomas Reib’s Corvette and Franco di Matteo’s Mustang. Lombard was however the man on the move as he came from the back to pass Wilford for second behind Rieb in reverse grid race 2. That trio now heads to the finale, each with a chance of taking the title. Vic Dias took both GT2 wins from Alan Ryan.
Another tight championship leader to consolidate his title advantage, Anthony Lessing won both ATE VW Challenge races off pole position. His closest title rivals, rookies Chris Tait and Josh Moore could only watch Lessing disappear as they shared out the second and third place. Speaking of sharing, Sebastien Bouilliart and Keegan Nathan each won a Class B race as Nathan moved up to second in the chase while Max Corbett wound up third for the day. And Bryce Pillay won both Class C races with Elna Croeser and Stuart Konig sharing the seconds as Pillay edged ahead in the title chase.
Lee Thompson pulverised his BMW M Performance competition to move to the top of the Turbo Series log. Former leader Anton Pommersheim and Leon Loubser shared the seconds. Ethan Coetzee beat Reiner Smith and Wessel Mostert to Class B, before Smith won race 2 from Mostert and Coetzee. Bennie Luyt and Reinhard Miller shared Class C wins as Johan Miller won both D races. Richard Gerntholtz beat Andre van Vuuren and Olerato Sekudu to the BMW NA race as Tiaan van Rooyen and Desmond Bloem took class wins. Van Vuuren won NA race 2 from Gerntholtz and Bernard de Gouveia, Claudio Jardim took Class D and Bloem took a second E win.
DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Fuel champion and log leader Lendl Jansen bounced back onto pole position at Red Star before ending a close second following a race-long duel with closest rival Brandon Hills. Kyle Watt fought MD Bester, Gert van der Berg, Vaughn Hills, Theodore Vermaak and Shaun van der Linde off in a keen spat for third. Jansen then took a welcome second race win from Vaughn and Brandon Hills, Bester, Peter Hills and van der Linde to move into striking distance of a title hat trick.
Wayne Robb’s Focus passed Jared Rossouw’s SupaPolo early on en route to the opening Digit FMS 111 GT and Saloons race. Mark du Toit’s BMW Z4 ended third from GTB winner Wayne Spicer as Tihan van Rooyen’s Polo took Class A, Piet Potgieter’s Golf topped Class B again and Troy Starr upset the C regulars. Wayne Lebotschy’s Golf won Class X, Dhiren Ganasen E and Leon Bredenkamp SuperHatch. Rossouw then bounced back to take race 2 from Robb as Spicer, van Rooyen, Potgieter, Starr, Lebotschy, Ganasen and Bredenkamp all won their classes again.
There’s one more stop for the 2026 Northern Regions Extreme Festival, back home at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria on Saturday 21 November. Diarise it now!
