Regional Extreme Festival heads for Delmas conflict
The 2026 Northern Regions Extreme Festival racing circus emerges from its Easter hiatus for what promises to be a cracking round 2 at the Red Star Raceway near Delmas on Saturday 16 May. Featuring the rolling thunder Dunlop V8 Supercars backed by cracking ATE VW Challenge, turbocharged and normally aspirated BMW M Performance Parts races, the DOE Formula Vees and Digit FMS 111 GT & Saloons racing with SuperHatch, there certainly will be something for everyone.
His Dunlop V8 Supercar rivals have put a target on the back of Thomas Reib’s Corvette, following his compelling start to the season. Larry Wilford, who raced the first ever V8 Supercar race 30 years ago, is still there leading the chase in his Ford Falcon alongside son Terry and Warren Lombard’s Mustangs, Franco di Matteo and Wayne Spicer’s Jaguars and Corvette man Steve Herbst’s GT2.
It’s the charge of the youth brigade in the ATE VW Challenge. Rookies Josh Moore and Chris Tait will fight the practised Anthony Lessing, Stuart Mack, and Francis Aldrich in Class A. Another freshman, Keegan Nathan and fellow second generation rookie Sebastian Bouillart look the pick of the Class B bunch against Keyaan Dwomoh, Chris Davison and returning Class C champion Martin de Beer. His former rivals, Stuart Konig, Bryce Pillay, Phillip Croeser and Dimitri Zapheriou continue to do Brat Pack battle.
The BMW M Performance Parts series is now divided into turbo and non-turbo classes where Anton Pommersheim appears to be the man to beat in the blown class with Sav Gualtieri, Leon Loubser and Lenard Archer for company. Ethan Coetzee, Bennie Luyt, Anand Naidu, Oz Biagioni and Craig Herbst do battle in Class C and Alan Hilligenn fights Eugene Gouws and Michal Grobler in D. The normally aspirated battles will see Andre van Vuuren, Olerato Sekudu and Richard Gerntholtz fight it out up front with Ignus du Plessis and Reinhardt Miller out to defend Class C and D honour.
Gert van der Berg is making double champion Lendl Jansen’s life difficult in DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Fuel. Others hoping to do the same are the Hills family, veteran dad Peter and sons Brandon and Vaughn Hills, sophomore Theodore Vermaak fresh off an impressive Simola Hillclimb run, Jaco Schriks, Kyle Watt and Marcel Blignaut, among others.
GTA men Jared Rossouw and Marius Truter’s Polos, Mark du Toit’s BMW Z4M and Wayne Robb’s Focus ST look the pick of the Digit FMS 111 GT & Saloons, Wouter Roos’ Golf GTI and Lenard Archer’s BMW 335i fight in GTB, while Charl Weyers Corsa is a hot bet in Class A, Piet Potgieter’s Golf in Class B and Louis Scholz’s Civic in C. And watch for Arthur Thorne’s Polo, Karel Stolts’ Etios and Hendrik Venter’s Corsa in SuperHatch.
Tight and twisty with straights between to build up a head, Red Star always makes for entertaining racing. The Delmas racetrack is situated conveniently close to Gauteng just off exit 485 on the N12 freeway. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend your Saturday!
