Several over-50 Masters to join Polo Cup action

Volkswagen Motorsport has confirmed that the Masters class will return to Polo Cup racing for the 2024 season. The new class for drivers over 50 years old will race alone off a separate start behind the existing pack of young guns. It will count as its own championship.

“We noticed a good number of, let’s just call it more mature competitors snapping up Polo Cup cars over the past few months and took the initiative to re-introduce a Masters class for 2024,” Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Driving Experience explains. “The new Masters class will cater for drivers of over 50 years of age. They will compete in their won race behind the regular young guns in the 28th straight year of Polo Cup racing.”

Jean-Pierre van der Walt was the most recent Polo Cup Masters champion in 2021, when the class counted for albeit slightly younger over-30 year old drivers. The 2024 Polo Cup season commences at Killarney in Cape Town in mid-March before travelling around the country over seven rounds with the National Extreme Festival.
