On Thursday, 28 August, Estcourt got a rolling classroom as NORMC arrived with a convoy of off-road machines. Committee member and competitor Phillip Hellerle handled the lot, from permissions to a traffic police escort, so learners could meet the cars up close and hear what the sport is all about.

Why it matters: getting young people involved keeps our sport alive and safe. Today’s curious learner becomes tomorrow’s driver, navigator, marshal, timekeeper, mechanic or media officer. The skills are real world too. Teamwork, discipline, road safety and problem solving travel well beyond the track.

Phillip’s talks and demos covered the cars, safety gear, road books and route marking. He was backed by vice chairman Michael Mickey Smit and Byron Prinsloo. Huge thanks to Estcourt Traffic Services, the schools and every volunteer who helped make the day rumble.
