For almost a decade, Nadira Maharaj has been a steady and spirited presence in KwaZulu-Natal’s motorsport circles. As the secretary at MMC&CC, she is the quiet force ensuring that every race day runs as seamlessly as the riders make it look.
From Admin Assistant to the Action
Nadira’s journey began not behind the wheel but behind the desk. “Leon Durow took over MMC&CC and I assisted him with admin,” she recalls. What started as helping out quickly became a heartfelt commitment. “It began with merely assisting Leon, but I quickly found myself captivated by the sport, particularly by the young riders. The kids put in a tremendous amount of effort, and I take pleasure in offering them support whenever I can.”
That spark of purpose turned into passion, and Nadira never looked back.
Behind Every Great Race
Long before the gates drop, Nadira’s work begins. “Preparation starts weeks in advance,” she explains. “I sort through documents and permits, and on race day, I’m up at 4 a.m. and at the track by 5:30.” Her focus is simple but profound. She makes sure riders and officials are looked after, no matter how hectic things get.
While the administrative side can be demanding, Nadira takes it in stride. “There’s a great deal of admin involved,” she laughs, “but for me, it’s not really about the challenge, it’s about the time it takes.”
Her reward? The smiles of young riders. “Their passion is contagious. I’ve watched them grow and succeed, and over time, they start to feel like my own children.”
Inspired by Dedication
When asked who inspires her, Nadira does not hesitate. “Leon Durow. He gives selflessly, always, without asking for anything in return.” It is that kind of leadership and teamwork that defines her experience in the sport.
For Nadira, officiating is not just about paperwork and podiums. It is about people. “In KZN, I’m part of a fantastic community of riders and officials. It feels like a family atmosphere, highly competitive yet filled with immense support for one another.”
Lessons from the Track
Motorsport has shaped Nadira both personally and professionally. “It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and introduced me to new adventures and incredible people. I’m grateful for the opportunity I was given.”
Though she insists she has no favourite events, “I enjoy them all,” she says with a smile. Her love for the sport is unmistakable. And when she is not trackside, you will likely find her in her happy place. “On my comfy couch with my book, lol.”
A Passion with Purpose
To Nadira, being part of Motorsport South Africa is about more than races. It is about impact. “MSA is nurturing young minds and inspiring them to exceed their boundaries,” she says proudly. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this journey.”
