Jonathan wins overall at Killarney as Bradley leads title to finale
Volkswagen Motorsport driver Jonathan Mogotsi took his second overall GTC SupaCup victory in a row with a convincing second race victory at Cape Town’s penultimate National Extreme Festival at Killarney International Raceway Saturday. Title rival Bradley Liebenberg however did enough to retain the championship lead with his first race victory, while local hero Danie van Niekerk wrapped up the GTC SupaCup Masters title at home.
With championship leader Keegan Campos and his Veloce Cars Carello Auto SupaPolo sitting this one out due to a date clash with the altar on his wedding day, GTC SupaCup was left to his title rivals Bradley Liebenberg’s Hype Energy Polo, Volkswagen factory pilot Jonathan Mogotsi, Arnold Neveling’s Goscor Lift trucks entry and Cape Town rookie Tate Bishop’s Angri LTR car to fight out.
Liebenberg wasted no time to go level with Campos on top of the championship log with the pole position bonus point, two tenths clear of Mogotsi, with a happy Bishop third from Neveling. Behind them, JP van der Walt returned to action in fifth aboard his Platinum Wheels SupaCup, from Lady racer Karah Hill’s Kalex version. Local man Danie van Niekerk topped the Maters grid in his Titan Stunts entry, with Graphix Supply World father and son David and Roberto Franco next up.
Bradley Liebenberg got off to a great start to lead the way from Jonathan Mogotsi, while Arnold Neveling managed to put one over Tate Bishop. Behind them. JP van der Walt sat in fifth from Danie van Niekerk, David and Roberto Franco and a recovering Karah Hill. Try as they may, Mogotsi and Neveling could not get close enough to Liebenberg to make a difference, with Bishop in hot pursuit and that’s how it ended. The only other change being Karah Hill catching and passing Robbie Franco for eighth in the dying stages. JP van der Walt however proved underweight on the post-race scales to promote van Niekerk to fifth from David Franco, Hill, and Robbie Franco.
Bradley Liebenberg was once again on pole position from Jonathan Mogotsi, Arnold Neveling and Tate Bishop for race 2. But Mogotsi must have had an extra energy bar with his lunch as he wasted no time to blast past his title rival Liebenberg and race off to a dominant race and overall victory, and his second such success in two meetings. Behind them, Arnold Neveling kept a watching brief, while Tate Bishop had to fight back against a feisty JP van der Walt to reclaim fourth. Danie van Niekerk watched all that go down has he sped home sixth to take Masters honours and wrap up that championship for 2023. He came home ahead of Karah Hill, David and second Masters man Roberto Franco
Jonathan Mogotsi’s larger second race advantage over Bradley Liebenberg’s race 1 winning margin handed the overall winner’s trophy to Jonathan. But Brad’s two bonus points to Jono’s one saw Liebenberg edge a point away from Mogotsi on the title chase. Leaving everything to fight for at Zwartkops next time out. Arnold Neveling meanwhile ended third overall from Tate Bishop, Danie van Niekerk, David Franco Karah Hill and Roberto Franco.
The GTC SupaCup championship finale goes down at Zwartkops Raceway’s Extreme Festival National Finals, Saturday 14 October.
