From building motors behind the scenes to taking his place on the track.

Originally from Kimberley and now based in East London, Percy’s love for Dirt Oval Track Racing was sparked while building motors for Shawn Collins in 2008 and 2009. But sitting on the grandstand just wasn’t enough. “I bought my first car from Dean Potgieter, an Opel Corsa, and the rest is history,” he recalls.

Now 47, Percy thrives on the adrenaline rush and the ever evolving challenges each race brings. “You are never too old to learn,” he says. “Every race is a new experience, and helping others in the sport keeps me passionate.”

Percy’s standout moments include competing on the national stage alongside South Africa’s top dirt oval racers. But it’s not just about results for him. “It’s not all about winning. It’s the bond with fellow competitors that makes this sport special.”

He credits his wife as one of his biggest motivators. “She pushes me to my limits, and the support I get from family, friends, and spectators is incredible.”

Known for his unique pre-race ritual of eating bananas (a shoutout to Baby Bokka E173) and always taking a moment to pray for the safety of all racers, Percy approaches each heat with heart and humility.

His advice to newcomers? “Enjoy the journey, and focus on the connections you make. That’s what racing is really about.”
