The FIA, the governing body for global motorsport, has awarded one of its highest accolades to long-serving South African motorsport official, Stephen Harding. Recognising Stephen’s decades of service to the sport which started as a club steward 45 years ago, the FIA Outstanding Official of the Year award he has been awarded reflects his pivotal role shaping South African and African motorsport through leadership positions across touring cars, rallying, rallycross, Formula E and rally raid.
Over that time, Stephen, who lives in Cape Town, was instrumental in organising or supporting global motorsport events in South Africa including iconic Formula E and Rallycross championship events. His dedication to mentorship and supporting the next generation of motorsport officials is a testament to his commitment and passion for the sport which will leave a lasting legacy in South Africa.
The FIA has presented Stephen with his accolade and this week released a film on YouTube exploring his extraordinary lifetime of service to both motorsport and South Africa. Stephen won the award as one of an estimated 302,000 volunteers and officials who power motorsport globally, fulfilling roles from marshals to stewards, race directors to medical and rescue crews.
The FIA has recently created an Officials Department to unite the training, development and support initiatives available to its global network of race makers who keep racing and rallying safe, smooth and fair. The motorsport community is strengthened by the variety of roles available to get involved and the FIA is proud to bring together a passionate community united by a shared love of the sport.
H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, said: “Volunteers and officials power our sport and I am delighted to recognise the commitment, passion, and expertise. Congratulations and thank you to our volunteers and officials for their continued service from grassroots to the global stage. It is their dedication that helps us go racing and rallying”
Motorsport South Africa CEO, Vic Maharaj, congratulated Stephen Harding on receiving the prestigious FIA Outstanding Official of the Year Award.
