For nearly four decades, Jackie Schreiber has been one of Gauteng’s most recognisable faces in South African motorsport. From rallying as a teenager to managing timing systems and running events as a Steward and Clerk of the Course, Jackie has seen it all and loved every minute of it.

From Rally Rival to Racing Leader

Jackie’s story began in the 1980s, where her competitive drive first showed behind the wheel of a rally car. But it was a twist of fate and a good mentor that set her on the path to officiating.

“I started helping with documentation and timekeeping at Zwartkops in 1987,” she recalls. “I was under the guidance of Isebel van der Westhuizen, who I had been competing against in rallying. She took me under her wing and got me involved.”

That first experience, she admits, was nerve-wracking. “I didn’t know circuit racing at all, but I’d been rallying since I was 15, so I knew what was expected. Then Dave Cross threw me into timing, and that was a rush! Making sure you hit that button for the right car at the right time… it hooked me instantly.”

Race Weekends and Controlled Chaos

When race weekends roll around, Jackie’s world kicks into high gear. “HECTIC!!!” she laughs. “You check things, double-check them, triple-check them, and then just hope you have everything. But things always change in the moment, so sometimes you just have to wing it.”

Her deep understanding of how each moving part fits together makes her a cornerstone of the Gauteng racing community. “Having come through the ranks, you learn to expect the unexpected,” she says. “But I absolutely love it.”

The People Make the Passion

Ask Jackie what keeps her coming back year after year, and her answer is instant: the people. “They’re what keeps me going, the riders, drivers, marshals, everyone. Knowing you make a difference in their lives means the world to me.”

Her favourite moments come when she sees young racers she’s known since childhood still running up to greet her. “Seeing those little kids grow up into young adults and still come running to their Aunty Jax, that makes every long day and late night worth it.”

Challenges and Lessons from the Track

Like every seasoned official, Jackie knows that the job comes with its challenges. “Keeping everybody happy,” she admits, “that’s the toughest part.”

But the rewards, she says, far outweigh the stress. “Officiating has shaped me into who I am, personally and professionally. It teaches you calm, patience, and perspective. You learn to ride the wave, never give up, and know that what you do truly matters.”

Stories from a Life in Racing

Jackie’s career is filled with unforgettable stories, from glamorous Grand Prix dinners to laugh-out-loud moments that only motorsport could create.

“One of my favourite memories is going to a South African Grand Prix dinner in Sandton,” she recalls. “A friend of mine was a massive Ayrton Senna fan, so I took him over to get an autograph. Senna recognised me because I was the Assistant Secretary for the GP. My friend nearly fell over!”

She laughs again remembering another moment. “Probably my most embarrassing was seeing Damon Hill in his jocks. He hid behind me at driver’s briefing to change into his racing overalls. I was 17 and as red as a tomato!”

The Bigger Picture

Over the years, Jackie has worked across nearly every motorsport category, rallying, motocross, drags, circuit racing, karting, cross country, and enduros. “I love them all,” she says. “But the international Grands Prix and 9 Hours will always hold a special place in my heart.”

When she is not officiating, Jackie can be found recharging outdoors. “At home or camping to recoup. I love the outdoors,” she smiles.

A Small Cog in a Big Wheel

For Jackie, being part of Motorsport South Africa is about teamwork and legacy. “I absolutely love being a small cog in a big wheel, helping it all turn for the greater good of motorsport.”
