Old hands, rookies and a dark horse set to impress
It’s all to play for as the second season of Investchem MSA4 racing prepares to blast off at the National Extreme Festival at Killarney in Cape Town Saturday 14 January. The wings and slicks single seater formula which evolved out of Formula 1600 last year, sees a field of young chargers racing a field of identical Volkswagen turbo-litre 3-cylinder powered Dunlop shod FIA safety specification race cars joined by a pack of old school Formula Ford Kents.
With maiden champion KC Ensor-Smith promoted to South African Touring Cars, the focus falls on the lad who fought him all the way down to the line last year. Mikel Bezuidenhout therefore has to be the man to beat in his Huawei Cosmonet Corsa dei Gemelli machine. Not that it’s a guarantee, with the likes of old rivals KMFT Morita entry, Karabo Malemela and Shrien Naidoo Production X Racing car to contend with.
Others to keep an eye on include the experienced Renzo Ribeiro’s Metal Used Spares ATT car and MSA4 sophomores, Red Dot Vantage Digital lad Liam Polome, Kent Swartz, Apex Cordset lass Anastasia Gerasis, Ndzalo Khoza’s Horizon Dynamics car and Investchem Chemical Logistics lady racer Simphiwe Mohlahlo.
They all have to deal with a definite dark horse. South African international Aqil Alibhai is back. And rest assured, he’s on a mission. Then there are the 2026 rookies. Karting starlet Gianna Pascoal has an impressive track record to suspect an impressive step up alongside fellow young karters, Aadam Kajee, Guido Bidoli, Kokoro Cloud CTO Sparco lad Chase Haskins and Huawei Cosmonet Corsa dei Gemali racer Wianko Fourie. The one thing you can be rest assured of, is that most of the Formula Ford Kent racers are significantly older than the dated machinery they drive behind the MSA4s. In fact, Investchem trio lan Schofield, Rick Morris and Allen Meyer and Magnificent Paints Ronald van Weely were all driving similar cars back in the 1980s! Son Nicholas van Weely and DV Building Supplies Alex Vos were however not even thought of back then!
Either way, the second season of Investchem MSA4 promises to be a cracker of note. Starting at Killarney this weekend, the series will follow the National Extreme festival around the country over seven rounds through to October. By when, with a little luck, South Africa’s leading single seater racing series will once again be set to go all the way down to the line…
