It is with great sadness that we share the passing of William Louw, a highly respected and deeply valued member of the South African motorsport community, following his brave battle with cancer.

William Andrew Louw was born on 7 October 1975 in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, and grew up in Warmbaths, now known as Bela Bela, in Limpopo. Motorsport became part of his life from a young age while assisting his father, who served as Chief Marshal for Rally events. What started as time spent alongside family soon grew into a lifelong passion and an unwavering commitment to rallying and motorsport safety across Africa.

In 1998, William became more actively involved in the sport while assisting at the Sasol Rally. Over the years, he took on many important roles, including Logistics Coordinator for the South African Rally Championship, SA National Rally Administrator and Championship Clerk of the Course. No matter the title, William approached every responsibility with humility, professionalism and complete dedication.

William was regarded as one of the most respected and dependable Clerks of the Course in South African motorsport. He carried himself with a calm presence that never faded, even in the most difficult situations. He treated everyone with kindness and respect, whether speaking to experienced officials or welcoming newcomers into the sport. Many marshals and officials will remember William not only for what he taught them, but for the encouragement, patience and support he gave so freely.

His contribution to the National Rally Championship over many years cannot truly be measured. William worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep rallying moving forward, often carrying responsibilities far beyond what most people ever realised. From sourcing roads and securing permits to preparing roadbooks, working with landowners and overseeing the running of events, he dedicated countless hours to ensuring rallies could take place safely and successfully.

William also played a major role in developing officials through Motorsport South Africa training initiatives, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation. In 2020, his dedication and expertise were recognised internationally when he was appointed by the FIA Safety Department as the FIA Safety Delegate for Africa.

Safety was always at the centre of William’s work. He spent endless hours working alongside organisers, ASN’s, marshals and safety teams across the continent to improve standards and educate those involved in the sport. His work helped create safer events and stronger rally structures throughout Africa, earning him enormous respect within the international rally community. His contribution in countries such as Uganda remains widely recognised and appreciated.

In 2025, Motorsport South Africa honoured William with a special award in recognition of his outstanding contribution and lifelong dedication to motorsport.

Those who knew William will remember a man who always made time to help others, no matter how busy or demanding the situation. He was dependable, humble and deeply passionate about the sport he loved. His presence at events, his leadership and his friendship will be missed by so many across the motorsport family.

On behalf of MSA, we extend our sincere condolences to William’s family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched through motorsport. His legacy will continue to live on through the people he mentored, the championships he helped build and the safer future he worked so hard to create for rallying in Africa.
