Kayde Cornofsky recorded a triple-podium on 25 March and rounded out the Kid ROK podium as the MSA National Karting Championship season opener commenced at Celso Scribante Raceway, Gqeberha. Unlike the majority of his rivals, Cornofsky entered the weekend without the benefit of familiarising himself with the newly added national circuit, making its return after four years.

Cornofsky’s race day commenced by setting the third-fastest time in Saturday’s qualifying session. The first heat saw him jostling for the runner-up spot with class debutant and the reigning national Bambino champion Noah Cronje. Despite momentarily holding the position, he opened his scorecard for the day with third place. He set the second-fastest time to secure a front-row start for the second heat, but the early battles saw him lose two positions. Cronje and Zac Boshoff passed him, but two laps later, he repassed Boshoff and started his pursuit of Cronje. The latter stages of the Heat 2 saw Cornofsky setting a host of fast lap times, and on the final lap, found himself in a position to challenge for the runner-up position. This battle concluded in a drag race down the main straight after Cornofsky took the inside line through the final corner but would miss out on the second position by a margin of 0.001 seconds.

However, a quick penultimate lap saw him again securing a front-row start for the day’s final heat. This time ahead of Cronje, whom he held off for the entire race, including solid defensive work on the final lap. Cornofsky finished the race as the runner-up, his best finish of the day to claim third overall.

“We started our 2023 season with some good racing, and we are happy with the day’s results,” said Cornofsky. “It was a fierce contest throughout, and we are confident about our chances at the other circuits this year, where we will also benefit from prior experience. I want to thank my team for making this weekend possible.”

Cornofsky’s next outing will be at the Vereeniging Kart Club for Round 2 of the MSA Northern Regions ROK Karting Championship set for 21-22 April. His next national outing will be on 26-27 May at Formula-K Kart Circuit, Benoni.
