Tight Regional Extreme chases add to the thrill
The 2026 Northern Regions Extreme Festival returns to Gauteng with several championships poised on a knife’s edge for Pretoria’s fifth round at Zwartkops on Saturday 12 September. Local fans are in for a treat with a full programme including the thundering Dunlop V8 Supercars action-packed ATE VW Challenge, full turbo and naturally aspirated BMW M Performance Parts grids, always entertaining DOE Formula Vees, Digit FMS 111 GT & Saloons racing and SuperHatch on the menu.
Thomas Reib’s Corvette and Terry Wilford and Warren Lombard’s Mustangs were all tied at the start of the last Dunlop V8 Supercars heat. Then they came in first, second and third. Which means there’s just a handful of points between them and all for each to win. Or lose, for that matter. Add a tight mid-pack tussle between Franco Di Matteo’s Jaguar and Wayne Spicer, Sam Dahl, and veteran Larry Wilford’s Falcons, among others, and we’re set for some classic V8 action.
It’s all about the rookies in ATE VW Challenge. Josh Moore moved ahead of Chris Tait and Anthony Lessing last time out. So this is another chase that’s ebbing and flowing through the season. Sebastian Bouillart leads Class B with Keyaan Dwomoh, Max Corbett, Jonathan Koning and Chris Davison in hot pursuit, and Keegan Nathan hopefully back at Zwartkops. Former Class C leader Bryce Pillay missed last round. Will he be back to grab Stuart Konig’s slender new advantage back?
Anton Pommersheim may appear to be in complete control of the BMW M Performance Parts Series Turbo chase. But all eyes are on dominant late starter Lee Thompson’s charge through the pack. Double champion Reiner Smith will be out for revenge over Ethan Coetzee and Wessel Mostert in Class B and it’s between, Bennie Luyt, Anand Naidu, Wessel Mostert and Oz Biagioni in Class C. The naturally aspirated BMWs race apart. Andre van Vuuren, Richard Gerntholtz and Olerato Sekudu will fight over Class B. And Reinhardt Miller and Nicholas Herbst lead C and D.
Speaking of vengeance, double champion and log leader Lendl Jansen had a weekend to forget last time out in the always entertaining DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Fuel, so he’ll be out to restore status quo. But with the Hill brothers Brandon and Vaughn and dad Peter, Gert van der Berg, Theo Vermaak and Jaco Schriks on a charge and Kyle Watt in fine form anything can and likely will happen at Zwartkops on Saturday.
The Digit FMS 111 GT and saloons always make for great entertainment and Saturday is no different. Jared Rossouw’s Polo, Wayne Robb’s Focus, Mark du Toit’s BMW, and Wouter Roos’ Golf are the form men in top class GTA. Jonathan Visser and Vic Dias top GTB. Melanie Spurr’s and Tihan van Rooyen’s Polos fight in Class A. Piet Potgieter’s Golf tops Class B, Henry van Vledder’s Golf tops Class C, Dean Parker D and Mini Le Roux E.
SuperHatch attracted a promising entry list by the time of writing. Ish Baloyi and Joshua du Toit’s Hondas, Karel Stols’ Etios, George Aldrich in a Peugeot and Mark du Toit’s BMW among the quicker of them. All Zwartkops’ regular on and off attractions, catering, displays and the rest will be in play on Saturday with braais welcome from the circuit’s many great vantage points. What better way to celebrate spring…?
