Regional Festival off to Aldo for annual away race
Not only are the competitors itching for the trip, but Eastern Province race fans can’t wait for something different when the 2026 Northern Regions Extreme Festival heads out of Gauteng for its annual away weekend at the Aldo Scribante racetrack in Gqeberha on Saturday 8 August. And there’s plenty for the Aldo faithful to look forward to, too.
First off, how quickly will the thundering Dunlop V8 Supercars lap the short, sharp Scribante? Never mind extreme close racing in the ATE VW Challenge, packed BMW M Performance Parts naturally aspirated and turbo classes, the ever entertaining DOE Formula Vees and the Digit FMS 111 GT & Saloons racing with SuperHatch. And just in case, expect a few EP local wildcards to cheer for among the classes.
Thomas Reib remains the man to beat in the Dunlop V8 Supercars, but Terry Wilford and Warren Lombard’s Mustangs have been on a charge of late and there’s a significantly larger grid than usual heading for Scribante. Among them are local Chevy heroes, Jody van Zummeren’s Corvette, and Gerald Beech in a Camaro. Plus the regular mid pack including Sam Dahl and veteran Larry Wilford’s Falcons, Franco di Matteo and Wayne Spicer’s Jaguars and another veteran, Steve Herbst’s Corvette, among others.
Ever consistent Anthony Lessing may only have won his first race in the most recent Zwartkops heat, but that’s enough to see him into the ATE VW Challenge championship lead over Class A rookie rivals Josh Moore and Chris Tait. Class B leaders Keyaan Dwomoh and Sebastian Bouillart certainly won’t miss Keegan Nathan, who skips this round to another sporting injury, with Jonathan Koning and Chris Davison right in there too. It’s tight in Brat Pack Class C, where Bryce Pillay, Stuart Konig and Dimitri Zapheriou are fighting it out.
Anton Pommersheim is in complete control of the BMW M Performance Parts Series Turbo Class A, but late starter Lee Thompson is the man to beat and watch for Leon Lobser too. Home hero Dean Ball plans to turn Class B on its head but he has double champion Reiner Smith and Ethan Coetzee to deal with. It’s between, Bennie Luyt, Anand Naidu, Wessel Mostert and Oz Biagioni in Class C. The naturally aspirated BMWs race apart where Andre van Vuuren, Ignus du Plessis and Olerato Sekudu fight over Class B, and Reinhardt Miller and Nicholas Herbst lead C and D.
Always entertaining, DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Fuel will be something different for Gqeberha race funs. On the ground it’s all about stopping double champion Lendl Jansen from romping to a title hat trick three of the six race wins so far. Other race winners, brothers Brandon and Vaughn Hills and Gert van der Berg are out to stop him, aided and abetted by dad Peter Hills, Theodore Vermaak, Jaco Schriks and the rest.
Last but not least, the Digit FMS 111 GT and saloons are often the most entertaining races of the day. Expect Jared Rossouw’s Polo to battle Wayne Robb’s Focus ST, Mark du Toit’s BMW Z4M, and Wouter Roos’ Golf up front in GTA. Jonathan Visser and Vic Dias top GTB. Melanie Spurr’s Polo leads Class A from Tihan van Rooyen, Piet Potgieter’s Golf tops Class B, Henry van Vledder’s Golf C, Dean Parker D, Mini Le Roux tops Class E and Ish Baloyi lead SuperHatch. And expect a few home heroes to cheer for there, too.
