Upcountry visitors turn Cape regional into a mini National

The 2026 South African Rotax Max karting season kicked off with what turned out to be a mini National in certain classes at Saturday’s Western Province regional championship opener at Killarney. A large group of Senior and Junior Max competitors took the chance to treat the weekend as a dry run for the opening National there on 28 March.

It was a case of the rise of the Junior Max graduates when an impressive field of out of town drivers pumped the Senior Max grid up to an impressive 22 karts. But it was local lad and 2024 Junior Max champion William Marshall who emerged on top with first and final race wins over second race winner, Gauteng girl Emma Dowling. Local lads, Seb Human and Jordon Wadeley were best of the rest ahead of Gauteng based EP reigning Junior Max champion Caleb Moss, local lad Keagan Beaumont, Jozi lass Georgia Lenaerts, Matthew Carter, Tayla Scrimgeour and Geo Christi.

Junior Max also enjoyed a significant number of upcountry insurgents preparing for the Killarney National in March to muster a 20-kart high school grid. But it was little-known second race winner Aleksandar Praizovic who shook the establishment to take the day. Local lad Max Boshoff completed his graduation from Mini Max with the third race win en route to second from Jozi visitor and final heat winner, Mini champion Brodi Dowling. Local lads Aiden Beaumont and Jose Slamet followed from Cristian Verheul, Jordan Klaasen, Ashaan Reddi, opening heat winner Michael Danks and Raffaele Musso.

Cape competitors however dictated the premier DD2 action as national champion Jason Coetzee sped to a dominant three-race rout over Matthew Wadeley, Joseph Oelz,
Ethan Stier, Tony Auby, Rafe Tayler, and Nikita Thieme. Jared Jordan likewise commenced his over-32 DD2 Masters campaign with a triple victory over Conor Hughes, Michael Jordan, and Jonathan Pieterse.

Locals also dominated the primary school action. Ruhan Victor sped to a two race to one under-13 Mini Max overall victory over Michael O’Mahoney, Logan Roehrig, Yaqeen Gamieldien, Liam Wharton, and Jozi national champion Luhan de Wet. Zac Boshoff followed from Jayden van der Merwe, Christian Naidoo, and Luwashe Mathebula.

It was a similar story in under-11 Micro Max where sophomore Radhi Harris took a dominant three race victory over Caleb Lingeveldt, Lehan Fourie, Slater Smith and Juan Stander. With Yaseen Panday, Aston Verheul, Aleena Doutie, Ashlyn Beaumont, and Zaid Panday in chase.

The Rotax action continues into the opening round of the Gauteng Northern Regions championship at Zwartkops in Pretoria this coming Saturday 28 February, before that all-important first National back at Killarney a month later on 28 March.
