Historic & Inland Tour a favourite among race fans
Zwartkops is limbering up for among its most popular meetings when the Historic and Inland Tour visits the Pretoria racetrack Saturday 28 March. Featuring ten cracking categories, historic action includes Legends of the 9 Hour Sports, GTs and Trans-Am, Marlboro Crane Legend and Little Giant Production Cars, Evapco HRSA Sprint and Pursuit Challenge and Single Seaters. Add contemporary action in the Dunlop ATS Lotus Challenge and Monoposto, a monster Silver Cup grid, and Pro Auto Clubmans.
Topping the bill, Seef Fourie Junior’s Mercury Cougar is out to avenge Ben Morgenrood’s Ford Mustang with Ford men Alistair Simpson’s Capri Perana, James Temple and Mark du Toit’s Fairlanes, Jonathan du Toit in a Chevy Nova, and the rest in splendid thundering action. Lola T70 trio, Larry Wilford’s, and Neil Lobb’s MK3Bs and Mark du Toit’s roadster, Allen Meyer and Mark du Toit’s Chevron B8s and the rest of the Legends of the 9 Hour will bring back wonderful memories with a bunch of Porsches and Cobras in chase.
Andre van der Merwe, Nicky Dicks, Peter Bailey, and Mo Mia’s Porsche 911 RSR should be the cars to beat in the 40-entry Evapco HRSA Sprints. But that will never stop the likes of Werner Kotze and Willem Botha’s Mazda R100s, Andre ten Napel and Jannie van Rooyen’s Sciroccos and Seef Fourie’s Datsun 140Y from trying. And will David Armstrong’s BMW, Mike O’Sullivan’s Ballade, Dave Leyshon’s Scirocco, Datsun duo Keegan Ward and Ian Richards’ Datsun be the men to beat in the classes?
Watch for Gary and Stan Stacey’s Ford Sierra XR8 and Alfa Romeo GTV6, Rob van Aarle’s Escort, Seef Fourie’s Anglia and John Simpson in an Alfa GT Junior, Wynand du Plessis’ Porsche, and Rob Clark’s Ballade in the back to front HRSA Pursuit. And Alan Poulter’s Volvo, Alfa Romeo five Niclole Donker, Marc Miller, Roger Houston, Francesco Lombardi and Joshua du Toit and Carel Pienaar’s Lotus Cortina in the Little Giants.
Historic single seater fans can look forward to Formula Ford men Ryan Ludik’s Titan, Paul Richardson, and Des Hillary’s Dulons, Steve Venter and Van Diemen duo Ben van der Westhuizen fighting off Colin Clay’s 23C sportscar and Formula Vee men Tony Beecher, Michael Kernick, and the rest. Perhaps more modern, the Monopostos must beat Allen Meyer’s Formula VW and GTi trio, Damien Archer, Joss Chaikin, and Nadine van der Merwe. Rest assured a pack of Formulae Ms and Vees will do their utmost.
Talking contemporary, the Dunlop ATS Lotus Challenge starts its season with Mackie Adlem, Dewald Smith, Josef Kotze and Rudi Barnard among the top Class A men. And Nick Hodgson, Sean Hepburn, Rachelle du Plessis, and Juan du Toit Locost favourites. The INEX Legends are also back with Pro lads Rico Baker, Sebastian Venkov, Tyler Posthumus, Tjaden Tromp and Dylan Fourie, Masters Neels Jooste, and Clint Buckham the ones to watch.
A monster 50-car Car Care Clinic SilverCup2.0 field makes it impossible to predict. That said, Anton Bitzer and Dewald Pretorius Mazda RX7s, Wessel Mostert in a BMW M3 Turbo, Zander Jacobs’ Corrado, Ulandi Exner in a Mini Cooper S, Lourens Taljaard’s Renault, and Johan Minnaar in a Backdraft Cobra are among many most interesting entries. Adriaan le Roux and Klippies Krige’s Super 7s should set the pace among the Real Pro Clubmans, NSCC, MHCC & Trofeo races. But Rodney Kruis and Victor Dias’ Ballades and Lerine Wentzel’s Subaru are among a few plausible wildcards.
With Braais, cooler boxes, and gazebos welcome and all the regular Zwartkops attractions on and off the track, entry is R130 for adults, R100 for students and kids under twelve free. What better way than to spend that balmy Pretoria 28 March Saturday than at Zwartkops’ Historic and Inland Tour? More at www.zwartkops.co.za
