Given the fact that the entire All Tar Rally takes place on the premises of the Killarney International Raceway alternative racing categories are invited to join in the fun on the day and it is essentially the BMW E36 Rally X members that joins in the fun. Now though it is simply considered a unique opportunity the competitive edge always shines through and besting the rally fraternity on total time always ups the ante.

Zack Groenewald and Gavin Haylett found themselves somewhere between the serious and fun categories as their Kaltron 43 C BMW 328i 3.0 proved extremely difficult to discipline. Those six trumpets under the bonnet made beautiful music and it created a serious itch in the rear wheels which simply wanted to run free and sideways.

They opted for the latter and the rally cars would dominate on overall time, but the Challenge category certainly won the hearts of the big crowd as they put on quite an entertaining show. Drifting on wide open spaces is one thing but when you are chasing a stopwatch and gaps that are hardly any wider than your car it becomes something to appreciate when they have to choose whether they want to be faster than their opposition.

Koos Swanepoel had his sixteen year old daughter, Amika, as pathfinder in the KSD 111 C BMW 328i 3.0 and she certainly did a great job whilst Koos turned a deaf ear occasionally. They drifted, spun , drifted some more, spun a few more times with more and more reaction from the spectators. The only one not enjoying this was Sebastian Swanepoel who had to sit and watch – and so we speculate about the next KSD BMW being built!

Both Zack and Koos could probably have gone faster, but thankfully they could never convince their throttle foot to release the loud pedal! Kobus de Kock and Andrew Goslett driving sensibly to finish third in their iLamuna 44 C BMW 328i (at least their car really still looks like a 328i minus the M3 performance).

Father and son, Pierre du Plessis and Wynand du Plessis, had a vison coming to Killarney in their Du Plessis Auto 241 B Toyota Conquest RSi 2.0 20v. They wanted to finish and finish well, but they also wanted to post a faster time than Jacques du Plessis in the Rally category. The Ceres brothers really gave it their all with a few spins, slight contact with the scenery and entertaining tussles and eventually it was “Ouboet” Pierre who won the little inter family dual by 29 seconds. They will be back.

Jaco Lambert and George Schutte were the coolest dudes on the event in their ex-Nico van Rensburg left hand drive Lawntech 14 B Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0. Having brought this car back to life shortly before the event they did not really know what to expect, but the little green machine handled superbly and Jaco even had time to wave to te crowd. Did anyone notice the name of this car on the rear numberplate?

Gerard Kloppers and Rick Kloppers brought a heavyweight to the scene with their DTM Helderberg 24 C Nissan Maxima 3.0, scaring themselves, the walls and the opposition by charging into narrow gaps or charging unsuspecting smaller cars enroute to sixth overall.

Barry Williams and Ryno Cordier fought a frustrating misfire all day in their Würth 117 C BMW 328i and did well to hang onto seventh spot, splitting the two DTM Helderberg Nissan Maxima entries as Wayne Wilson and Stacy Wilson interrogated a few walls enroute to eighth overall. Gary Manwaring and Charl Opperman opted for the “if you cannot avoid them, join them option” and placed their Air Brake 4B Nissan Maxima 3.0 ninth on debut.

But the result of the day (yeah, it is a sentimental decision) was Jared McIntyre and Weslee McIntyre who placed their ex-Elton Hurst Clubmans Toyota Corolla 1.6 20v tenth overall on debut. Jared has been part of the rallying scene since barely escaping diapers and it was heartwarming to see the brothers realise their dream to start and finish their first rally in a car dubbed Louis (the name of their grandfather who was born in 1933). Inexperience possibly resulting in 13min lateness time penalty but it did not matter – not this time!

Trevor Hutchings and Layne Hutchings another father and son combination that should never be under estimated in their HSC Racing 71 B Volkswagen Golf MkI 2.0 but they slid straight past their own gearbox and had to retire from the event after SS4.

Tiaan Burger and Ewan Owen had a very impressive looking Burger’s Equipment 69 C BMW E36 328i armed with a huge wing to do battle but probably gained too much traction and retired with a broken sideshaft after SS3. Jean Naudé and Quinton Carstens had little mercy for their 7C TN Pools BMW E36 328i with too many spins to remember – unless you were the clutch on this car and yes it eventually expired.

Watch, there will be more of them in 2026!
