The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has released an important update outlining the dangers and consequences of using substances classified as “Substances of Abuse” under the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code.

These substances, including cocaine, heroin, MDMA/ecstasy, and THC (cannabis), are prohibited In-Competition due to their potential to harm athletes’ health, impair performance, and violate the spirit of sport. The advisory also highlights additional concerns related to nicotine and alcohol, both commonly misused in and beyond the sporting world.

Competitors who test positive may face sanctions of up to four years, though this may be reduced under certain conditions. SAIDS also addresses potential therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs), outlines associated health risks, and stresses the importance of responsible conduct both on and off the track.
