After an 18-year absence, the FIM Motocross World Championship made its long-awaited return to South African soil, and the inaugural MXGP of South Africa at Terra Topia exceeded every expectation. Across two action-packed days, the world’s best riders delivered thrilling racing, while thousands of passionate fans created an electric atmosphere that celebrated the return of top-level motocross to Africa.

Saturday’s opening day provided the perfect curtain-raiser. A crisp winter morning gave way to warm sunshine as riders tackled free practice, timed practice, qualifying, and the qualifying races on Terra Topia’s fast, technical circuit. Dusty conditions and high speeds made for spectacular viewing, with the world’s elite immediately showcasing why the MXGP is regarded as the pinnacle of motocross competition.

The qualifying races set the tone for what was to come, with the international stars demonstrating incredible pace while South Africa’s own riders rose to the occasion in front of a passionate home crowd. Every lap was fiercely contested, leaving fans eagerly anticipating Sunday’s Grand Prix races.

Sunday delivered a fitting finale to a truly historic weekend. A sold-out crowd packed Terra Topia, creating an unforgettable atmosphere as perfect winter weather provided the backdrop for world-class racing. The excitement was palpable from the moment the gates dropped, with every rider pushing to the limit in pursuit of championship points.

In the premier MXGP class, Belgium’s Lucas Coenen was simply unstoppable. After a dominant qualifying performance, he completed a perfect weekend by winning both Grand Prix races to secure the overall victory, ahead of Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre. The flawless performance further strengthened Coenen’s lead in the 2026 championship standings.

The MX2 category produced another commanding display, with Spain’s Guillem Farrés taking victory in both motos to claim the overall win. His perfect weekend significantly closed the gap in the MX2 World Championship and confirmed his status as one of the title favourites heading into the second half of the season.

While the international stars battled for Grand Prix honours, South Africa’s riders earned plenty of applause from the home crowd. Camden McLellan continued to demonstrate why he remains one of the country’s brightest talents, while Calvin Vlaanderen thrilled local supporters with one of his strongest performances of the season in the MXGP class, underlining the quality of South African motocross on the world stage.

Beyond the racing itself, the weekend represented far more than another championship round. The return of MXGP to South Africa showcased the country’s ability to host a world-class international motorsport event. From the professionally prepared Terra Topia circuit to the enthusiastic crowds that filled the venue over both days, the event demonstrated the passion for motocross that has remained strong despite the championship’s lengthy absence.

As the final chequered flag fell and the celebrations began, one thing was clear: the MXGP’s return to South Africa was an overwhelming success. Terra Topia delivered an unforgettable weekend of elite racing, passionate fans, and memorable moments that will be remembered for years to come.

For South African motocross, this was more than just another race weekend—it was the beginning of an exciting new chapter. If the atmosphere, support and organisation are anything to go by, the hope is that the MXGP will become a regular fixture on the international calendar, bringing the world’s fastest riders back to South African soil for many years to come.
