Historic & Inland Tour quite literally a blast from the past

Monster grids, exotic cars, and classic racing. How much better could it get? Zwartkops hosts its second three of hugely popular Historic and Inland Tour meetings at the Pretoria racetrack this 10 and 11 July weekend.

Featuring ten exceptional categories, historic action includes Legends of the 9 Hour Sports, GTs and Trans-Am, Marlboro Crane Legend and Little Giant Production Cars, Evapco HRSA Sprint and Pursuit Challenge and Single Seaters. Add contemporary action in the Dunlop ATS Lotus Challenge, Liqui Moly Super Vees and Monoposto, a monster Silver Cup grid, and real Pro Auto Clubmans.

There are no less than four mighty Lola T70 entered for the Legends of the 9 Hour races. Mark du Toit’s roadster is joined by brother Jonathan, Larry Wilford’s, and Neil Lobb’s MK3Bs. Add Peter Bailey’s Ford GT40, Allen Meyer’s Chevron B8, Daytonas, Porsches and Cobras and the rest and you’re guaranteed some truly magical memories.

Then the monster Legends V8s. Ben Morgenrood and Jonathan Needham’s Mustangs are up against Alistair Simpson’s Capri Perana, Colin Ellison, and a mystery driver’s Camaros. Add some really big machinery like Seef Fourie Junior’s rapid Mercury Cougar, Paige Lindenberg and Mark du Toit’s Fairlanes, Jonathan du Toit in a Chevy Nova, and the rest and you’re guaranteed splendid, thundering action.

Nicky Dicks, Peter Bailey, and George Avvukomedes’ Porsche 911 RSRs should be the cars to beat in the 48-entry Evapco HRSA Sprints. But never dismiss likes of Werner Kotze and Willem Botha’s Mazda R100s, Andre ten Napel and Jannie van Rooyen’s Sciroccos and Seef Fourie’s Datsun 140Y. And will David Armstrong’s BMW, Mike O’Sullivan’s Ballade, Dave Leyshon’s Scirocco, Datsun duo Keegan Ward and Ian Richards remain the men to beat in the classes?

Historic single seater fans can look forward to Formula Ford men, Ian Schofield’s Reynard, Ryan Ludik’s Titan, Paul Richardson, and Des Hillary’s Dulons, Steve Venter and Van Diemen duo Ben van der Westhuizen fighting off Colin Clay’s 23C sportscar. Also watch for Formula Vee men Tony Beecher, Michael Kernick, and the rest.

A touch more modern, Allen Meyer’s Formula VW and GTi trio, Damien Archer, Joss Chaikin, and Nadine van der Merwe are the machines to beat in the Monoposto races. Rest assured a pack of Formulae Ms and Vees will do their utmost. And the Liqui Moly SuperVees will see lads the likes of Lushen Ramchander and Blaine de Meillon taking on the ladies including Tanya Breytenbach, and Bianca Ferreira.

The Dunlop ATS Lotus Challenge sees Thomas Falkiner taking a return to take on Mackie Adlem, Dewald Smith, Josef Kotze, Rudi Barnard and Roelf’s daughter Rachelle du Plessis among the top Class A men and women. And Nick Hodgson, Sean Hepburn, and Juan du Toit are among the Locost favourites.

So big is the Car Care Clinic SilverCup 2.0 field that it’s been split into two races. Anton Bitzer and Dewald Pretorius Mazda RX7s, Wessel Mostert’s BMW M3 Turbo, Zander Jacobs’ Corrado, Ulandi Exner’s Mini Cooper, and Johan Minnaar in a Backdraft Cobra S are among those to watch. Adriaan le Roux and Klippies Krige’s Super 7s should set the pace among the Real Pro Clubmans, NSCC, MHCC & Trofeo races with Rodney Kruis and Victor Dias’ Ballades and Lerine Wentzel’s Subaru among the wildcards.

Being Zwartkops, braais, cooler boxes, gazebos, and the rest are welcome trackside where all the regular attractions are ready to entertain. With qualifying and first races Friday afternoon, Saturday is dedicated to the bulk of the racing action. Entry is R120 for adults, R100 for students and kids under twelve enter free.
