Great day of preparation delivers Killarney fireworks

The Western Province Rotax Max karters took advantage of a perfect Cape winter’s day to complete their final preparations for the coming weekend’s Nationals up in Benoni. In a day that delivered domination as much as it did thrills, the locals now seem ready to defend their dominant start to the South African season at home back in March.

Joseph Oelz, Matthew Wadeley, and a troubled Jason Coetzee shared out the entertaining DD2 gearbox kart wins as Oelz took the day from Wadeley, Ethan Stier, Coetzee, Tony Auby, and Nikita Thieme. Coetzee was not the only driver to suffer a difficult day as Conor Hughes sped to a DD2 Masters triple over Justin Rogers and Marco Viegas, while brothers Jared and Michael Jordan struggled.

Sebastiano Human sounded a warning to his coming weekend’s National rivals up at Formula K in Benoni with a dominant triple Senior Max win at home. Behind him, Jordon Wadeley pipped Jesse Swart, Matthew Carter, Onwabile Mcinga and Geo Christl for a close fought second.

Max Boshoff made high school Junior Max his own as he sped to a triple win. Justin Milleskie, Raffaele Musso, Ruan Lewis, Michael Danks and Courtney Milleskie fought over the scraps.

The significant 15-kart under-13 Mini Max kids put on the show of the day. Ruhan Victor scored a couple of seconds and a third to top the podium from second heat winner, Liam Wharton, Michael O’Mahoney first race winner Zac Boshoff, final heat victor Jayden van der Merwe and Yaqeen Gamieldien.

Slater Smith went unchecked in under-11 Micro Max. He left Caleb Lingeveldt to fend Lehan Fourie, Radhi Harris, Yaseen Panday and Aleena Doutie off for a close-fought second for the day.

And Zeeva Strydom benefited Zaid Panday’s misfortune to win the opening baby Bambino heat before twice chasing Zaid home in the following heats to take the day from Pillay, Blake van Deventer, Remi Coxon and Sebastian Fletcher.

Most competitors then packed their karts for the trip to the Formula K Rotax National on Sunday before round 3 and the African Open up at Zwartkops 4 July. They return to local action at Killarney on Saturday 8 August.
