Top of the Hill Challenge ready to thrill race fans this weekend

Following its huge inaugural success last year, Zwartkops Raceway’s Top of the Hill Challenge has shifted to an end of the season date for its second running on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 November. Which also promises to make it an even grander, more fun affair. The two kilometre climb starting at turn 4 and running in the reverse direction, all the way up to Turn 5 and the finish, proved hugely popular first time out. So expect it to be bigger and better having once again attracted a diverse, interesting, and most competitive entry.

A chance for Gauteng fans to witness cars of quite literally every shape and size, including many only otherwise seen on the Simola Hillclimb supercars flat out first hand at the Reef, the Zwartkops Raceway Top of the Hill Challenge truly is something completely different. Starting with the Modified class, reigning King of the Hill Reghard Roets and Franco Scribante’s fearsome Godzilla hillclimb Nissan GT-R Rs have last year’s runner-up Pieter Zeelie’s wild Toyota MR2 to contend with. Don’t ignore racing tin top gang, Franco Scribante’s new Audi RS3, Aldo Scribante’s Audi S4, Charles Fowld’s Subaru WRX STis.

Pierre Bester’s Mercedes-AMG, 4 BMW men, Mark du Toit’s Z4 and Gary Martins M2 50d and Volkswagen Motorsport man Jonathan Mogotsi’s hillclimb SupaPolo are all certain wildcards. Volkswagen Motorsport also has a most interesting contest where four of its Rookie Cup stars team up with four motoring journalists. And the Street class will see a BMW M4 taking on a gang of Porsches including a 911 Turbo, a GT3 and a 911 RS. Add a troop of Ford Mustangs including four Shelby Super Snakes and even an electric Volvo EX30, among others.

The single-seaters should be super quick where Ian Schofield’s ex-Nols Nieman Formula Atlantic March 77B is by no means a sure bet with rivals like Robert Wolk’s Gould GR55 hillclimb special on hand. The Classic Top of the Hill sees South African racing specials from as far back as the ‘fifties in action with Rodney Green and Patrick Gearing’s Rileys up against Grant Haskins’ ex-Les Miler 1947 MG Spider Special and Stuart Grieg in a Formula 2 Cooper Climax. Historic tin-tops include everything from Austin A35s and Cooper S through Fords, Alfa Romeos, and Opels to rumbling V8 Chevy Camaros.

The Zwartkops Top of the Hill Challenge starts with practice Friday, before qualifying heats and the all-important finals from 13h30 Saturday 22 November. All the regular Zwartkops off-track attractions from food, drink, and other vendors to kiddies entertainment, and the rest, will be in place. Get your tickets at the gate at R230, or R150 for students for both days. Kids under 12 enter free, to witness a Top of the Hill spectacle not to be missed!
