For nearly five decades, Andre Clifford Grewe has been a familiar face at the track, ensuring that every start, every flag, and every lap runs with precision. Based in the Western Cape, Andre serves as a Scrutineer and Starter, roles he has carried out with quiet dedication and unmistakable passion for 48 years.

From the Stands to the Start Line

Andre’s motorsport journey began humbly, tagging along to Killarney with his uncle as a young boy. What started as weekend spectating soon became hands on work helping out in the pits, and before long, he found himself volunteering as an official. His curiosity and love for the technical side of the sport led him into scrutineering, where he discovered that motorsport is far more than just the thrill of the race.

“I found out there was a lot more to motorsport than watching,” he recalls. “Oil leaks, seat belts, roll bars, clothing, even the direction of a master link clip. There was so much to learn.”

Precision, Passion, and a Steady Hand

As a Starter, Andre’s weekends are a flurry of focus and coordination. From preparing lap sheets and checking lights to managing 16 races in a single day, he ensures that every race begins and ends safely. It is a demanding role that requires razor-sharp attention and constant communication.

“The most challenging part is keeping track of the cars while listening to the radio as they speed past,” he admits with a smile. “But nothing beats the joy of seeing a competitor’s face when they take the chequered flag.”

Motorsport and Family

For Andre, officiating has never been just a job. It is a lifelong hobby that connects him to a wider community of friends who share the same love for the sport. His standout moments include flagging Continental Super Truck races, World Rally Cross, and even Formula E. And when he is not at the track, you will find him behind the wheel of his Land Rover, off-roading or visiting his kids.

“I have been around so long it feels like I am part of a larger family,” he says.
