Ensor-Smith, Bezuidenhout win to set up epic finale

Championship leaders KC Ensor-Smith and Mikel Bezuidenhout shared out the Investchem MSA4 wins at Saturday’s Red Star Regional Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola. Mikel put it on pole for the opening heat, but slumped to third as KC won, but Mikel bounced back to take the second race from KC, who opened up his advantage by a point to nine points with two races still to run and set up an epic championship finale at Zwartkops in three weeks.

It started well for Mikel Bezuidenhout who grabbed the pole position bonus point aboard his Cosmonet Huawei Corse di Gemelli MSA4. We set an impressive lap four tenths of a second quicker, to line up alongside KC Ensor-Smith in his African Heating Investchem machine. Behind them, Renzo Ribeiro’s Metal Used Spares entry stood third on the grid alongside Karabo Malemela’s KMFT Morita car as Liam Polome’s Red Dot Vanage MSA4 and Production X lad Shrien Naidoo closed of the top six.

Adriaan Nel’s Central Cycles MSA4 lined up seventh ahead of debutant karting graduate Kent Swartz, Ndzalo Khoza MakaselaAir car, and Apex Cordset lass Anastasia Gerasis in tenth. Nicholas van Weely was back in eleventh ahead of Jorden Moodley and Simphiwe Mohlahlo. Investchem trio, Ian Schofield, Allen Meyer and Rick Morris meanwhile topped the old school Formula Ford Kent grid ahead of Magnificent Paint & Hardware man Ron van Weely.

KC Ensor-Smith not only managed to put one over Mikel Bezuidenhout to pass his title rival to win the opening race, but Renzo Ribeiro also found a way through to see the pendulum swing back towards log leader KC. Shrien Naidoo came home fourth from Adriaan Nel, who made up a couple of positions to come home fifth ahead of Karabo Malemela, Kent Swartz and Nicholas van Weely. Khoza and Polome closed off the top ten from Gerasis, Moodley and Mohlahlo. Rick Morris took the Kent win from Meyer and van Weely after Schofield stopped.

Mikel Bezuidenhout was however nowhere near done and bounced back to win heat 2 and narrow the championship points deficit down. KC Ensor-Smith brought it home second to minimise the championship damage, with Karabo Malemela third from Renzo Ribeiro, Adriaan Nel and Kent Swartz sixth. Nicholas van Weely followed ahead of Ndzalo Khoza and Liam Polome. Significantly, Shrien Naidoo in tenth stole the fastest lap bonus point ahead of Moodley and Mohlahlo after Gerasis stopped. Ian Schofield meantime returned to beat Morris, Meyer and van Weely to Kent honours.

So, KC Ensor-Smith took the overall win for the day from title rival Mikel Bezuidenhout and Renzo Ribeiro as Rick Morris took the Kent trophy home. Through all that, Ensor-Smith extended his overall advantage by a point to nine over Bezuidenhout. While now out of championship contention, the battle for third is even tighter with just two points between Renzo Ribeiro, Karabo Malemela and Shrien Naidoo and everything to do at the first ever Investchem MSA4 finals at Zwartkops on Saturday 25 October.
