Brilliant racing, record grids at Zwartkops, Killarney

South African Rotax Max Challenge karting was on double duty once again with regional action in both Gauteng and the Cape on Saturday. Zwartkops hosted third round Gauteng Northern Regions championship races in Pretoria, while the fourth round of the Western Province championships went down at Killarney in Cape Town.

It was a day of dominance in DD2, where KC Ensor-Smith trumped his upcountry rivals with a triple win over Dusan Radojevic, Gabriel Fernandez, Masters man Justin Rogers, Olerato Sekudu and Namibian Nikita Thieme at Zwartkops. Jason Coetzee left his Cape rivals to fight for the scraps with a triple win at Killarney. Joseph Oelz emerged best of the rest from Matthew Wadeley, Sebastian Boyd, Anwil April, and Ethan Stier. Fifth overall, Jared Jordan made Masters his own over Conor Huges and Jono Pieterse.

It was tighter in Senior Max at Killarney, where William Marshall fought back to take the day two races to one from Charl Visser, Luca Wehrli, Jesse Swart, Keagan Beaumont, and Storm Lanfear in an impressive 12 kart field. A similar scenario played out upcountry, where double winner Kent Swartz fought middle race winner Mikel Bezuidenhout off to take the Gauteng Senior. Roshaan Goodman was third from Ethan Bostander, Jonno Wilson and Gianna Pascoal on a most impressive 17-kart grid.

Final race winner Reagile Mailula was back on top to take an epic 18-kart Zwartkops high school Junior Max win for the day from first heat winner Caleb Odendaal, Emma Dowling, second race winner Mattao Mason, Jack Moore and Keenan du Plessis. Sebastiano Human however went unchecked down in the Cape from Michael Danks, Aiden Beaumont, Andrew Retter and Zach McAuley.

Max Boshoff was another lad to go unbeaten in Killarney under-13 Mini Max. Liam Wharton was best of the rest on a countback over Jayden van der Merwe, Ruhan Victor, Zac Boshoff and Qaaint Doutie on a strong Cape 11-kart grid. 24 Mini Max kids including several drivers from neighbouring countries raced at Zwartkops. Renaldo Koen reigned supreme over Declan Jurgens, Maddox Mason, Diego Antunes, Christian Naidoo, and Ruvan Maritz. Namibian Nande Kaiyamano best of the visitors, in ninth.

Adriaan Steyn fought second race winner Luke du Toit off to take the Zwartkops under 11 Micro Max day, with Luhan de Wet third for the day. Ronald Venter ended up fourth from Aston Verheul, Raidyn Reddy, and Namibian Gury dos Santos. Yaqeen Gamieldien meantime went unbeaten down in the Cape, leaving Slater Smith to hold Michael O’Mahoney, Logan Roehrig, Radhi Harris, and Caleb Lingeveldt off for second.

Divaaj Govender continued his Cape Bambino domination with another Killarney triple over Aleena Doutie, Emelee Adriaans and Ashlyn Beaumont. It was far busier at Zwartkops with fourteen Bambino karts fighting it out, but none could stop Alonzo de Oliveira from running away with a triple win from Ndwambi Rofhiwa, Yinhla Makhubele, Che Makhubele, Sebastien Shuttleworth and Grayson Venter.

“Rotax Max karting delivered another cracking weekend of regional racing off record grids in some classes around the country,” Rotax SA karting boss Ed Murray concluded. “Now it’s all eyes on the third round Rotax Nationals with the best in the country fighting it out on neutral ground at iDube in KZN on Saturday 14 June. Bring it on!”
