Tate Bishop took to the Vereeniging Kart Circuit this past weekend (May 20-21) for the first time in a KZ2 kart, claiming a runner-up overall finish in the championship's top karting class as the second round of the MSA National Karting Championship got underway in cold and wet conditions.

In his first full season as a KZ2 competitor, Bishop qualified his ANGRi Racing Kosmic kart on the front row of the grid (P2) on Saturday morning, where he took the early lead in the race. After leading for seven of the 12 laps, he was passed and went on to take the chequered flag as runner up. Heat 2 would see the 15-year-old Capetonian start from fourth and work his way up into the lead on Lap 2, a position he held for two laps before again finishing as runner up.

However, the final heat would be disappointing for Bishop, who, after starting third on the grid, made his way into second before Turn 1. While pushing for the lead, he hit an offline wet patch that sent him off circuit which dropped him to eleventh. Gradually making his way through the field into ninth (Lap 3) and then seventh (Lap 5), Bishop would cross the finish line in sixth but would later inherit another position as a competitor ahead was penalised. After the overall results were tallied, Bishop was awarded the second overall finish.

"I'm a little frustrated with the final heat as it was the one I wanted to win," said Bishop. "I made a good start and had the run on Josh (Coertze) but ended up hitting a small puddle in the fight for the corner. That sent me off circuit and I was fortunate to not make contact with the tyre barrier. While I recovered, I was down the field but was able to salvage a few positions. Generally, we had good pace this weekend, and a second overall isn't too bad. I must thank the ANGRiRacing team for the effort, as always."

Bishop will now focus on his preparation for this weekend's upcoming CompCare Polo Cup Championship at Aldo Scribante Racetrack, Gqeberha.
