After just over six months since the 2020 season finale, the new Liqui Moly INEX Legends season is set to start at Zwartkops Raceway on May 21-22.

The continuing COVID-19 pandemic has plagued the series in the first part of 2021 with the start of the season being delayed twice already. The series was set to start at Red Star Raceway in February, but issues to obtain a permit despite professional sporting events being allowed under the adjusted lockdown measures saw the entire race weekend cancelled early on. A second attempt was made to start the season at Zwartkops Raceway in March, however, uncertainties related to proposed changes in the rules related to inter-provincial travel saw the category withdrawing from the event.

“In some ways, this has been even more of a frustrating year than 2020” says the South African series owner and former South African and World Champion Devin Robertson. “After we already didn’t crown a champion in 2020, we started this year with our backs against the wall after no less than three major circuit-racing events had to be cancelled. Of course, the uncertainties regarding legislation didn’t help our cause either in March. With a lot of our competitors being based outside Gauteng, it is a tough one to seek commitment when there is no certainty about a calendar and whether people will be allowed to participate. As with most countries, these decisions are out of our control. But with all our drivers being privateers, those circumstances make it even harder when you take it into account that very few people can afford to lose the fees related to entries and preparation.”

The revised 2021 calendar will see seven rounds at four circuits. As in 2019, Dezzi Raceway will make a return to the calendar while The Rock Raceway also returns to the schedule to host two rounds, including the season finale which will form part of the Rockmania event.

  • Round 1 – Zwartkops Raceway - May 21-22
  • Round 2 – Red Star Raceway – July 9-10
  • Round 3 – Dezzi Raceway – August 6-7
  • Round 4 – The Rock Raceway – September 11
  • Round 5 – Red Star Raceway – October 15-16
  • Round 6 – Zwartkops Raceway – November 12-13
  • Round 7 – The Rock Raceway – December 11

The Zwartkops Raceway season opener will see Devin Robertson and 2019’s series champion Jagger Robertson participating along with Richard van Heerde, Johann van der Venter, Riaan Draper, Charl Roux, Gerhard Roux and Sean Moore. Caleb Cotterel will be making his debut in the series.

The event will see all three points-paying races take place on Saturday, May 22. A final programme of events will be released by the event promoter in the week leading into the event.  At present, spectators are not able to attend sporting events as per the rules set out by the South African Government. Fans are invited to keep up with the results and news from the season opener by following the Liqui Moly INEX Legends Facebook page on https://web.facebook.com/INEXLegendsSA.
