The Stiaan Kriel Racing trio is set to build on their victorious 2020 visit to the Border Motorsport East London Grand Prix Circuit this coming weekend (May 21-22) in Round 2 of the South African Endurance Series.
In an endurance race that saw the team having to contend with rapid changes in the weather and early mechanical problems, they took their maiden Class E victory following a superb performance in the race, particularly in a tricky final stint with Kosie Weyers behind the wheel.
“It was the weekend that started us on the path to becoming the successful unit we are now” says Stiaan Kriel, Team Owner and Driver. “Every bit of success in racing is something to feel proud of, but your first win in a series is always something that you look back on fondly. This year we will be aiming to emulate that, especially after an opening-round that left us on the back foot”
In Dezzi Raceway, the trio also including Weyers and Robin Kriel. failed to complete the race due to an accident after winning the initial part of the six-hour race in their Backdraft Roadster. This sees them entering Round 2 in eighth place on the points table.
“What happened at Dezzi Raceway was unfortunate, but given that we already lost time due to a clutch replacement, the damage was more related to repair costs than significant points losses. We know that we are strong in East London and we are ready for the four-hour race that lies ahead. We need a strong result to get our championship goals back on track and nothing will be left to chance.”
Friday will see three 20-minute practice sessions ahead of the afternoon’s qualifying session. Saturday will see an early morning 15-minute warm-up session with the four-hour race scheduled to start at 13:30.
As per the regulations under the current National State of Disaster in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is a prohibition on the in-person attendance of spectators at sporting events. The race will however be streamed online with more details being made available through the course of the week.
Kriel’s South African Endurance Series campaign is supported by T-Rex Racing, Creative Ink Media, Platinum Wheels, Italian Panelbeaters, Spanjaard, Titan Tools, Habot Oil and the Backdraft Production Series.
