Louis van Greunen was a familiar name in the Western Province Rally Championship from 1973 till 1987. A humble but pretty determined competitor the immaculate preparation of his cars will always be remembered and though he would normally be found in the middle of the starting list you would soon learn your error in underestimating his ability to run consistent under any condition. Respected and liked by all his passing at age 82 closes a chapter in the history of the oldest sporting regional championship in South Africa.
Born 12 June 1938 Louis started rallying a Spilhaus Toyota Corona 1600 in 1973 before moving on to the JB’s Motors Datsun P510 1600 SSS and a Swartwes Motors Toyota Corolla Liftback 1.6. One of the earliest drivers to make the move to front wheel driven cars in the region he would truly make a name for himself in the always immaculately prepared and surprisingly quick Swartwes Motors Opel Kadett GL 1600.
Louis and Ellen van Greunen were married on 10 February 2018.
Funeral service 11h00 at NG Church, St Helena Bay on Thursday 8 April 2021.
