The Pesty Racing team is ready to improve on its successful debut circuit racing season as they head to Dezzi Raceway for the opening round of the 2021 South African Endurance Series this coming weekend (April 9-10).
The unchanged driving trio of Harm Pretorius, Barend Pretorius and Eduan Bester will again be piloting their Backdraft Roadster with which they finished their first campaign in fourth place on the points table in Class E. Not only did they finish the year as the highest-ranked circuit racing rookies in the class, but in the overall standings as well. Dezzi Raceway was also the venue where they recorded their only podium finish for the season, in only their fourth attempt.
“We have learned a lot from our debut year” says Team Owner and Driver Harm Pretorius. “Last year we were the new kids on the block in an environment which was different to the offroad motorcycle environment we come from in the Gauteng Xcross Country Club. We made some mistakes and a lot of our processes only got refined as the season progressed and we learned how to do things more efficiently. I think we were astonished by our own success. Nevertheless, we set a high benchmark to improve on this year and we are looking forward to doing so.”
One new challenge for this weekend will be the “two races on one day” format to be used for the season opener; something that last occurred in the South African Endurance Series at the 2019 season finale before the team’s entry. Listed as the Dezzi 6 Hour, the event will consist of two three-hour races. The first of these will start at 07:30 on Saturday morning with the second at 12:30.
“It is something new yes and with this being something like a double-points round, you will need to think about this differently. The ideal situation would be to have a competitive approach for both races, but you could easily find yourself in a situation where you will need to realign your focus to perhaps one race only. You must also take into account that there will only be two hours between these races. This will be a very intriguing endurance outing and this could make for an interesting day for everyone. While being a Turn 1 Maverick is never the approach to follow in endurance racing, this will certainly be a day to play a different type of long game.”
Both races will be streamed via the South African Endurance Series Facebook page.
