The Stiaan Kriel Racing team will aim to emerge as South African Endurance Series title contenders in the double-header season-opener at Dezzi Raceway this coming weekend (April 9-10).
This will be the team’s second season in the series with the trio of Stiaan Kriel, Kosie Weyers and Robyn Kriel again piloting their Backdraft Roadster. In 2020, they finished the season in third and seventh position on the respective Class E and Overall points tables. Following a debut-race podium, they also went on to secure two more wins.
“We have certainly performed well In what was the first time of competing in endurance racing for all three of us” says Team Owner and Driver Stiaan Kriel. “All our finishes saw us celebrating podium results, it was the two DNFs that hurt our campaign last year. And to be honest, both of those failures were beyond our control, but it does show that you simply cannot afford to leave anything to chance in this series. You do not get a more dedicated unit than this team and I know we will push even harder.”
Kriel continues to highlight the experience gained by the trio of drivers in 2020. “Last year it was all new to us. Apart from a few one-off appearances for Kosie, it was his first full season back in circuit racing since his 2013 Polo Cup championship win. Both Robyn and I have done our fair share of sprint racing, but nothing close to endurance distance. The Backdraft Roadster was also something entirely new to us. I believe this year we are a lot better prepared for the season ahead. We have managed to fine-tune our strategies for race weekends taking into account who the best drivers are at certain times. As a whole, we have continuity in the personnel department which is already a benefit to carry into a new campaign.”
While 2020’s visit to Dezzi Raceway saw the team delivering their best performance, they will have a new race format for the coming weekend. Officially referred to as the Dezzi 6 Hour, the event will consist of two separate three-hour races with a two-hour interval. Both races will carry separate points.
“We are certainly familiar with two races with a two-hour gap in between, but this is of course in sprint events. Potentially you can gain a lot with success in both races at Dezzi Raceway, but it will take a lot of concentration and you have to plan everything to the last detail. So we will pretty much treat this as an eight-hour event. It is something very innovative from the SAES team and we are looking forward to it.”
Friday will see six practice sessions before Qualifying. Saturday morning will see an early start with the first race scheduled for 07:30. Race 2 will start at 12:30. Both races will be streamed live via the South African Endurance Series Facebook page.
Kriel’s South African Endurance Series campaign is supported by T-Rex Racing, Creative Ink Media, Platinum Wheels, Italian Panelbeaters, Spanjaard and the Backdraft Production Series.
