A week after being crowned 2020 Mobil 1 V8 Supercars champion, Mackie Adlem added the Lotus Challenge Class B title to his name at Red Star Raceway in the season finale (November 13-14).
After starting on the front row of the Class B grid alongside fellow title contender and pole-sitter Jeffrey Kruger in Race 1, Adlem occupied second place in the opening three laps. He took over the lead of the race when Kruger retired on Lap 4 due to a broken V-belt. He was closely followed over the line by stablemates Andre Human and Rudi Barnard. Further back, David Coetzee made it four Adlem Auto Racing entries in the top four while Gys van der Walt finished in seventh place.
In Race 2, Adlem finished as runner-up to Kruger which was enough to ensure the title. Barnard, who was also still in contention before the first race, made it two podium finishes for the day further back. Coetzee and Van der Walt finished in sixth and seventh places respectively.
Ruan van der Walt could mathematically still take the Class L Championship heading into the round, but needed his two wins backed up by results playing out in his favour. The double victory came after a host of issues with an engine oil cap that kept coming loose. Not only did this severely limit Van der Walt’s opportunities to perfect his setup in Friday’s practice sessions, but also limited his effort in Qualifying to a single flying lap which saw him set the fourth-fastest time. The part remained firmly mounted on his car for the duration of the two races. In Race 2 he also set the fastest lap in the class for the weekend.
