Former South African and world champion Devin Robertson took a hattrick of wins in the season finale of the 2020 Liqui Moly INEX Legends season held at Red Star Raceway this past weekend (November 13-14).

The category’s second 2020 visit to the circuit was hosted as a stand-alone event with the championship abandoned following the impact of COVID-19 which saw the calendar reduced to less than 50% of scheduled rounds.

Saturday morning’s draw for the Race 1 grid saw Johann van de Venter lining up in pole position ahead of Richard van Heerde. Seef Fourie Jnr and Devin Robertson shared the second row while Gerhard and Charl Roux completed the top-six. Jagger and Justin Robertson lined up in seventh and eighth places respectively with debutant Riaan Draper started at the back of the grid.

Van de Venter and Charl Roux were eliminated from the opening race shortly after the start due to contact between the pair. Fourie Jnr moved into the early-lead of the six-lap race with Devin and Justin Robertson in tow. A good tussle at the front of the field followed with Devin Robertson moving into the lead on Lap 3. Fourie Jnr stayed in close contention throughout and finished the race as runner-up just 0.075 of a second behind Robertson. Justin Robertson completed the podium while Gerhard Roux finished in fourth place. Van Heerde lost three positions in the opening laps but held off Jagger Robertson to finish in fifth place.  Draper occupied sixth place in the early stages, but lost the position to Gerhard Roux on Lap 2 and was the last driver to finish in seventh place.

In Race 2, Justin Robertson moved into the lead off the line with Fourie and Devin Robertson in close pursuit. Devin Robertson delivered a level-headed performance; picking off Fourie Jnr on Lap 2 and Justin Robertson a lap later to set himself up for his second win of the day. Lap 3 also saw Fourie Jnr making his way past the latter to retake second place, but an engine failure on the final lap brought his race and day to a halt. This saw Justin Robertson finishing as runner-up. Further back, a battle ensued for the final podium position in the closing stages. From seventh place at the start of Lap 4, Gerhard Roux made up positions in the final two laps to finish in third place; closely followed by Charl Roux, Jagger Robertson and Richard van Heerde.  Draper held off Van der Venter to finish in seventh place while Fourie Jnr was classified in ninth position as he completed 67% of the race distance.

Race 3 saw Jagger Robertson moving into the early lead, but was passed by Devin Robertson on Lap 3 after the latter made his way through the field from the back of the grid. Devin Robertson went on to take a clean sweep of race wins on the day with Justin Robertson making it three podium finishes. Gerhard Roux passed Jagger Robertson on the fifth lap to claim the final podium spot. Charl Roux, Van Heerde, Draper and Van de Venter completed the results.

INEX Legends South Africa would like to thank Liqui Moly South Africa, Autozone, Rubro Construction, Big Boss Auto and Global Roofing Solutions for making their 2020 season possible.
