FULL THROTTLE AHEAD FOR MOTOCROSS AND ENDURO’S
Printer friendly version
Africa’s largest motorcycle accessory chain store, Full Throttle, has extended their involvement with Motocross by securing the Naming and Broadcasting Rights for National Motocross Championship for the balance of the 2009 season and with a view on extending this involvement for another five years.

This follows their very successful involvement with Northern Regions and Free State Regional Motocross Championship as well as with Regional Quad Motocross in the past 2 years.

To top this, they have also secured the rights for the balance of the 2009 National Enduro Championship and will extend this for a further five years in 2010.

Sean Rosenberg, Managing Director and Owner of Full Throttle says, whilst everyone is feeling the pinch, Full Throttle shops are expanding, moving to bigger premises and investing in local racing, with an eye on breeding new champions.

The benefit for clubs organising National events will be twofold. Firstly, the benefit of the broadcasting of the event, which would save the club a significant amount of money in so far as the production and placement costs goes. Secondly, Full Throttle undertook to provide either financial or product to clubs, which can be used to off-set against event costs.

The Full Throttle contribution is not insignificant if one considers that production costs can amount to as much as R100 000 per programme.

In conjunction with MSA, Full Throttle will grow their Amateur Racing Series, which is aimed at entry level competitors, not wanting to compete at a club level yet.

The agreement reached with Full Throttle means that the Amateur Series, which is quite unique and specific to the Northern Regions, will take place under MSA’s umbrella and permits and will be restricted to three specific venues at dates agreed upon.

The crux of this agreement means that an entry level rider can obtain restricted competition licence from MSA which will permit his participation in these sanctioned events. Should a competitor wish to participate in club championships a MSA Club Licence would be required and the “restricted” licence can be upgraded.

There is no doubt that the inclusion of the social rider base in the more competitive arena, will benefit motorsport in the long term. Any person involved in motorsport will know that starting at the bottom leads to a greater involvement in the sport. There is also no doubt that motorsport caters for the family and the involvement of a family member will generally involve the entire family.

Full Throttle’s principle is to create a ZERO to HERO format where entry level competitors will be able to climb through the ranks and ultimately end up at the top of the ladder.

Collaboration between the parties is unique and undoubtedly in the best interest of motorsport, whilst no compromising any of MSA’s rules and regulations.

Motorsport South Africa - going greener, faster
Printer friendly version
In celebration of World Environment Day on 5th June, Motorsport South Africa (MSA), the controlling body of all forms of motorsport in South Africa, has embarked on a greening campaign to plant trees at disadvantaged schools across the country.

In 1996, MSA became the first National Sports Federation in South Africa to adopt an Environmental Code and recently appointed a specialist Environmental Panel as part of their structure. Through this management structure MSA ensures that the highest environmental standards are met during the organisation and hosting of more than 1 200 motorsport events annually at all levels and it also promotes environmental education amongst all motorsport role players (approximately 16 000 competitors).

With financial assistance from the international controlling body of motorcycling, the FIM, trees were purchased from national greening social enterprise, Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA).

With their assistance, as well as regional representatives from MSA, the trees will be planted in June at 11 schools in the Western Cape, KwaZulu Natal, Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, to promote greening, awareness of climate change, food security and to offset carbon dioxide emissions.

Marius Matthee, President of the MSA Environment Panel, said one of the Panel’s objectives was to plant 500 trees in 2009. “It is great to work in conjunction with FTFA. The tree planting events highlight the benefits of trees and greening, thereby educating the youth on important environmental and climate change issues. Trees are integral to the quality of human life and the environment. When managed in a sustainable way they can continue to supply current and future generations with a wide range of essential ecological, social and economic goods and services”.
Beaulah Schoeman, Managing Director of MSA, says Environmental issues are inherently linked with quality of life and motorsport is proud to do its small bit in providing green “lungs” or even food security that support quality living environments. MSA is fully committed to the environment and wishes to be at the forefront of environmental awareness and protection. We are further committed to reducing our environmental impact as part of a wider commitment to sustainable development.”

These commitments ensure that the environment, social and recreational values are maintained, whilst promoting sustainable motosport in South Africa for future generations. MSA wishes competitors in all categories of motorsport enjoyment in their chosen sport, while caring for the environment at the same time.

The tree planting initiative starts with an event on the 3rd of June at Northlands School in KwaZulu Natal at 09h00. There will be a second tree planting at Siniwe Primary School at 13h00 in Gauteng, and the third event will take place at 10h00 at Sir Lowry Sustainable Project in the Western Cape. Distributions of the balance of the trees to various schools countrywide will take place between the 3rd of June and the 5th of June. For more information, or to attend any of these events, please contact Mary-Anne on 011 803 9750 or mary@trees.org.za, or Mr Marius Matthee on matthee@capewinelands.gov.za

MSA calls on clubs to take hands and join in celebrations
Printer friendly version
MSA has further called upon its clubs, organisers and promoters to partake in special environmentally related projects around World Environment Day and has even offered a cash contribution to the club with the best campaign.

The response from some fraternities, i.e the WesBank Super Series, have been very positive and with the assistance of the categories in the WesBank Super Series, a big Environmental Drive will be made at the round of the WSS in East London on 6 June. The East London Grand Prix Circuit is unique in that it is regarded an “Open Green Space”, borders a nature reserve that forms part of the “Buffalo City Municipality Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan 2005”, forms part of the “National Coastal management Plan C” and includes sensitive “Coastal Forest”, “Dune Forest” and “Coastal Thicket” within it’s parameters.

WesBank purchased 200 trees, some of which will be planted at the Circuit and others at a nearby disadvantaged school.

All categories have also agreed to display the new Environmental Logo decals on their cars and motorcycles.

MSA made various suggestions to Clubs and Organisers to become involved, by initiating their own activities, i.e.
• Ask the commentators to remind spectators and competitors about World Environment Day on an ongoing basis during the day
• Create awareness on Environment Day by attaching a message to your E-mail signature.
• Place a reminder on Environment Day on your website.
• Include an advertisement on World Environment Day in your Event programme, or alternatively just include a notice.
• Plant a tree.
• Discourage caterers to use plastic bags.
• Replace light bulbs with energy saving ones.
• Save paper
• Sort rubbish and provide separate rubble bins for plastic, glass, oil and paper.
• Encourage officials and/or interested parties to become an Environment Steward
• Adopt-a-river or an area neat the race and organize a clean-up campaign with the assistance of local schools for instance.
• Institute an award at the end of Race Day for the “environment friendliest” competitor, i.e. the competitor whose pit area was the cleanest.

MSA also now has flags available, featuring the MSA logo and the Environment Logo, The size is 180cms by 120cms and they cost R650 each.
