Bridgestone-backed development rider wins junior motocross
Joshua ‘Bubba’ Mlimi emulated his US motocross hero James ‘Bubba’ Stewart in the last round of the Full Throttle national junior motocross championship in Gauteng, with two race wins out of three heats and a first overall for the day in the hotly-contested 65 cc class.
The 10-year-old from Bloubosrand in Gauteng, riding a Bridgestone/TRP Distributors/Thor KTM, was leading the Northern Regions championship half way through the season when he was sidelined by an injury and missed a couple of races. The brave lad still managed to finish 4th in this championship and 13th in the national championship.
Mlimi, a student at Sharonlea Primary School, has been racing for four years and has already notched up some impressive statistics in his short career so far.
He was ninth in the national championships in 2006 in the 50 cc class, followed this up with a top-15 finish in 2007, was sixth overall in 2008 and also won the Northern Regions and Free State championships last year.
He counts both the American superstar Stewart and SA’s world MX2 champion in 2008, Tyla Rattray, as his heroes. When not racing motorcycles, he enjoys BMX, soccer and PSP games.
