Round 7 of the MOTUL Clubmans Championship returned to the Zwartkops Raceway this past weekend fielding its largest grid of the season. Participating in the regional Inland Championship, the seven-class Index-of-Performance championship saw over 35 cars enter the Spring-leg of the championship.

The grid for Race 1, made up of both Modified Production Cars (MPC) and Super Saloon Cars (SSC), was determined by Saturday morning’s qualifying in cooler conditions, following some inclement weather during Friday’s practice.

The opening race saw MPC Class A pole sitter, Adrian Dalton (Xtra Clothing & Shoes VW Golf Mk1) take the victory over Class B winner, Bjorn Gebert (FAS Racing Alfa Romeo GTV6) and Ian Ehlers (FEC Racing Polo – Class A). Dalton, who missed a number of rounds this season, was under pressure from Gebert throughout the race but a focussed drive saw him prevail. The Class C win went to Johan van der Vyfer (Devlaw Subaru), while Ismail Peck (National Hotrods Mzanzi Honda Civic) took home the Class D honours. Roland Hopkins (Rietchard Scrap Metals VW Golf Mk1), the sole class runner took the win in Class E with Ebrahim Peck, in his Geardown Gearbox sponsored VW Golf Mk1, taking the Class F victory.

In the SSC battle, Stefan Snyders (STETON Investments 1972 Porsche 911) beat Ricard Schuhardt (RS Motorsport Botswana 1974 Porsche 911) to the checkered flag followed home by Riaan Draper in his Auto Classic/Blessed Wheels-backed Peugeot.

Race 2 saw the SSC class start ahead of the MPC class. Marius Jacobs (AAA Recovery Centre Tigra), whose car was down on power in the first race, led Draper and Schuhardt off the line. Further back Dalton held up the MPC competitors as he dictated the pace over the start line for Race 2. He was however forced to fend off a determined Ehlers, who kept him honest throughout the eight-lap race. With Schuhardt taking the win in SS, Dalton took his second MPC-Class A win on the day.

Class B’s Dirk Lawrence (Vaal Timbers/JDM Tuning Honda Ballade) started ahead of the returning Louis Cloete (AMS Tuning VW Beetle) and Paul van Niekerk (Turbo Trix VW Golf Mk1), both who have been out for a few races. Lawrence, however, had to concede his lead to Cloete, and later to Van Niekerk, and finished third.  Van der Vyver won Class C ahead of the duo of Henshaw and Wayne Perreira (VW Golf Mk1), both forced to retire from the race.

Ismail Peck took the Class D win ahead of Jody Robertson (JRT Racing VW Polo) and overall Index-of-Performance championship leader, Duane Brown (Brown’s Auto Ford Fiesta). Hopkins again took the Class E win. Ebrahim Peck made it a double win in Class F when he took the checkered flag ahead of Leon Bester (JRT Racing VW Polo).
