Newly-crowned FIA European Rallycross Supercar Champion Reinis Nitišs will join the RX2 International Series presented by Cooper Tires for its 2018 season finale in South Africa later this month (24/25 November).
Despite being only 22 years of age, Nitišs has a wealth of experience in the sport and an impressive résumé. The youngest World Championship event-winner in FIA history – triumphing in only his third World RX start with Olsbergs MSE back in 2014 – has seven podium finishes to his credit from four full seasons at the pinnacle of the discipline, but he remains under no illusions about the challenge he faces.
Nitišs sampled the Supercar Lites machinery that forms the basis for RX2 at Tierp Arena in Sweden last month, finishing fourth in the RallyX Nordic finale with Sports Racing Technologies (SRT).
As he prepares to rejoin the team alongside Vasiliy Gryazin at Cape Town’s Killarney International Raceway, the Latvian – who took three wins from five starts in Euro RX this year en route to the coveted crown – is fired-up to gauge himself against the current cream of the RX2 crop.
“SRT approached me to join them for the event at Tierp, and as my Euro RX season had already concluded, I did not hesitate to take the opportunity,” he explained. “I know how valuable having a second driver is to a team, and how much faster it makes the process of finding the right set-up.
“The experience was clearly a positive one as we achieved pretty good results and have now expanded our collaboration to South Africa as well. It’s a circuit I already know from last year, so that should play in my favour.
“On the other hand, whilst the racing at Tierp was far from easy, only a handful of RX2 guys were there, so the competition will be stronger in two weeks’ time. It will be a great test and benchmark for me as a driver, to see where I stand amongst the RX2 Series regulars!”
The full RX2 entry list for South Africa will be revealed next week.
