It has been quite a long winter break in the 2018 MotorMart VW Challenge season.

The MotorMart Racing Team utilised the break to prepare for the second half of their debut season and they’re confident that they’ll be a force to be reckoned with at Round 5 of the championship which will see them in action at Dezzi Raceway on Saturday, July 11.

Although the championship already had its away round for the season at the Killarney International Raceway outside Cape Town, a special ruling due to another venue not being available saw Dezzi Raceway being classified as a round hosted within the northern regions. This will see the championship making its maiden visit to the 2.5km circuit situated on the Kwazulu-Natal coastline. Only a small handful of drivers in the championship have competed at Dezzi Raceway in other categories; something which will level the playing field significantly.

“It will be an exciting learning curve for us; especially as the circuit is so much different from anywhere else in South Africa.” Says Team Owner and Class B driver Mohamed Dangor. “It’s not the driver with the most powerful car who will conquer, it will be the driver who’ll get to grips with the tight and twisty circuit and who can implement it into the setup. Dezzi almost resembles Monaco with a little bit more run-off space. With not many opportunities to pass available, a good grid position will be crucial and this will form part of our strategy.”

Dangor has been on the fringes of podium results during Round 4 at Midvaal Raceway and a is confident that recent suspension changes will see him as a firm challenger: “If we can fine tune the handling to match our pace, this will see us as strong contenders for podium results during the second half of the season. And we’re certainly aiming for victories as well. We’ve learned to walk and quickly got into a situation where we had to learn to run. Our next goal is to outrun.”

The team’s Class A challenge will be headed up by Quinton Needham. Spirited performances during the first half of the season saw him only securing a few strong finishes with reliability and accidents playing a severe role: “Perhaps we must send Lady Luck a formal invite to join us as VIP guest.” Remarks Needham jokingly. “There’s a lot more positives from our season than what our results will show. The mid-season break gave us the opportunity to regroup and we’re pretty motivated ahead of the next four rounds. It will also be exciting to learn a new circuit. Only one of our Class A rivals will go into the round with prior experience so it will be a level playing field. Rapidly getting to know a new circuit has always been a personal strength of mine”

In Class C Robbie da Silva returns to driving duties for the remainder of the 2018 season. Round 4 saw super-sub Andre Needham bagging good results in Da Silva’s Volkswagen Polo while conducting further on-track tests within a race environment. The winter break provided the team with adequate time to resolve the power issues which they’ve experienced with the car. Da Silva feels confident ahead of the Dezzi Raceway trip: “Being in a competitive car builds driver confidence which will see us on the front foot while learning a new circuit. It feels good to be back in the car and I’m motivated to go out there and make the most of it. This will also be my first time out in Class C, so I have quite a bit to look forward to.”

This will event will be a dual commitment for Da Silva who will also be competing in the Car Care Clinic 111 Sports & Saloon category in his Volkswagen Golf Mk 1.

The MotorMart Racing Team would like to invite all motorsport fans in Kwazulu-Natal to attend the day’s action packed line-up which will form part of the Historic Tour. Fans are also welcome to meet the team in pit lane.

The MotorMart Racing team would like to thank their sponsors Speedy Den 4x4 World, SignINK and PTE Security for the continued support. In addition the team would also like to acknowledge and thank the associate sponsors of the MotorMart VW Challenge for making this exciting category possible: Norbrake Distribution, ATE Brakes, Dicktator Engine Management Systems, Yaskawa, Pozidrive and BPM Engineering.
