World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. It is an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. It is an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Motorsport South African (MSA), who is one of the country’s leading sports federations on environment matters, would like to request all our competitors, clubs, organizers, venue owners and promoters to incorporate celebrations of Environment Day should you have motorsport racing activities planned during the month of June.

The purpose of World Environment Day is to focus worldwide attention on the importance of the environment and stimulate attention and action.  Any effort and activity, no matter how big or small will be appreciated.  MSA are merely suggesting a few proposals to inspire you with some ideas, i.e:

  • Institute an environmental award at the end of race day for the “environment friendliest” competitor or team, i.e. the competitor /team with the cleanest pit area.
  • During the month of JUNE, arrange with race announcers to inform
  • spectators about basic environmental concerns, i.e. littering at race meetings, etc
  • Create awareness by attaching an environmental message to your E-mail signature
  • Place a reminder on Environment Day on your website.
  • Include an advertisement on World Environment Day in your Race Day programme, or alternatively just include a notice.
  • Plant a tree
  • Encourage officials and/or interested parties to become an MSA Environment Steward
  • Arrange an Environmental presentation at your club or circuit

Let us know how you celebrated World Environment Day on your Race Day and please send us your photos.

Visit Motorsport South Africa’s website www.motorsport.co.za for detailed information about the Environmental Code, Environmental Documentation, Training Documents & Video and the latest Environmental News.

Our role-players are also reminded of the annual MSA Environmental Award. The award will be presented to the circuit, organiser, club or individual, who is assessed to have taken the most care of the environment during the year - either at motorsport events, or general environmental protection. Candidatures for the MSA Environmental Award must be submitted to MSA by 31 October at the latest.
